Infinity Insurance Review: Auto Insurance Customer Complaints, AM Best & JD Power Ratings

This Infinity Insurance review will evaluate, for the most recent six year period where reliable statistics are available (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 & 2014), the auto insurance complaints for the subsidiary companies of Infinity Property & Casualty Corporation, to determine whether each subsidiary, such as Infinity Auto Insurance Company or Infinity Indemnity Insurance Company, has a better-than-average, average, or worse-than-average customer complaint record.

I’ll look at increases & decreases in market share (as measured by annual written premiums) for each Infinity subsidiary, as a possible indication of high or low auto insurance rates. I’ll also review Infinity’s JD Power customer satisfaction ratings & AM Best financial strength ratings. Lastly, this review will compare the auto insurance complaint records for the Infinity Group companies, with major competitors, like Allstate, Progressive, GEICO, The General, & Farmers.

Infinity Group Auto Insurance Complaints Review

Infinity sells nonstandard auto insurance, designed for drivers not qualifying for standard auto insurance rates, because of their driving record, license suspensions, no prior insurance, less than three years of driving experience in the USA, or other factors. Infinity insures drivers many other companies won’t insure. If you qualify for standard auto insurance, don’t waste your time getting auto insurance quotes from nonstandard auto insurance companies designed specifically for higher risk drivers, like Infinity & The General. Some large insurance groups, like Progressive & GEICO, sell auto insurance at preferred, standard, and nonstandard rates, and have competitive rates for all types of drivers. However, many insurance companies, like State Farm, have little interest offering higher risk auto insurance coverage, or do not have a nonstandard auto insurance subsidiary, like Amica.

In some states, if you are under age 25, and have something as minor as one moving violation on your driving record, some auto insurance companies may not insure you. If you have an at-fault accident or two moving violations, more auto insurance companies are likely to decline to insure you. If you, or a driver in your household, has a major violation, like reckless driving, excessive speeding, DUI, or multiple at-fault accidents or a lapse in auto insurance coverage, you may find only nonstandard auto insurance companies will insure you.

A combination of factors (subject to state law), like being single and under age 25, having only one older car, poor credit, a recent claim, a traffic ticket, or even a not-at-fault accident, might mean nonstandard auto insurance companies are your only option.

Per the Infinity Website, Infinity claims to be “the second largest writer of non-standard automobile insurance in the nation” (The largest is most likely Progressive). Over the years, smaller nonstandard (& sometimes standard) auto insurance companies have consolidated. Infinity Property & Casualty Corporation (IPCC) is the combination of the Infinity Insurance Companies, Atlanta Casualty Companies, Leader Insurance, Windsor Auto, and Great American Personal Lines Companies.

Infinity sells its nonstandard auto insurance through independent insurance agents representing multiple companies, with offices located in communities throughout the 43 states where Infinity offers auto insurance coverage. Due to the nature of insuring higher risk drivers, most nonstandard auto insurance companies or subsidiaries have a higher number of complaints than standard or preferred insurance companies or subsidiaries, and often much higher auto insurance complaint ratios. In the last section of this review, when I compare the Infinity companies auto insurance complaint records to other leading companies, I will compare them, to the best of my knowledge, to the nonstandard auto insurance subsidiaries of the leading companies.

Buyers of nonstandard auto insurance are usually most concerned with getting the best price or the lowest down payment, but the complaint information in this review should be considered in the buying decision. At the very least, this review will show you other nonstandard auto insurance companies to help you shop to find the best price.

This Infinity Insurance Group review is divided into four sections, consisting of: 1. its AM Best Financial Strength Ratings, 2. JD Power insurance customer & claims satisfaction scores & ratings for Infinity compared to competing companies 3. its auto insurance customer complaint records & change in market share for the Infinity subsidiaries, 4. information about competing auto insurance companies, and how their complaint records compare to the Infinity companies.

1. AM Best Financial Strength Ratings for the Infinity Insurance Companies

The auto insurance subsidiaries of Infinity Property & Casualty Corp. have an A (Excellent) AM Best Financial Strength Rating with a stable outlook (no ratings upgrade or downgrade is expected in the near future) reaffirmed as of 12/16/2014. A is the third highest rating for AM Best. I become concerned with any car or homeowners insurance company or subsidiary with less than an A- rating for financial strength from AM Best.

AM Best financial strength ratings are not a measure of customer service or the quality of the claims adjusting for any of the Infinity companies, but an opinion about their ability to pay claims, remain financially solvent, and stay in business. I recommend avoiding, if possible or practical, any auto or homeowners insurance company with lower than an “A-” rating for financial strength from AM Best. Some major auto & home insurance companies have higher financial strength ratings than the Infinity companies, but the difference in financial strength among A++, A+, A, & A- rated companies is not significant to me unless higher rated companies are the same or better in terms of price, coverage, claims handling, and customer service.

2. Infinity JD Power Auto & Home Insurance Ratings for 2012, 2013, 2014, & 2015

I’ll compare the numerical scores (instead of the power circle rating) for Infinity auto insurance, to the industry average and the scores of competing insurance companies, for each JD Power insurance study (2012-2015) where it was rated. Infinity was included in only one annual JD Power insurance study:

The Annual JD Power Auto Insurance Customer Satisfaction Study

Infinity was rated in two of the eleven regional studies (California & Florida regions) composing the 2013 JD Power US Auto Insurance Customer Satisfaction Study, but the company did not have large enough of a sample share of its customers responding to the survey to be included in the 2014 study. Infinity customers or potential customers living in states other than California or Florida can use the results for Infinity in California & Florida as a good proxy for how Infinity performs in their state.

California Region (State of CA only)

2015: Infinity scored 88 points (on a 1,000 point scale) or 8.8% below the 2015 California region average, at 715 out of 1,000 points. Infinity was the lowest scoring company in the 2015 California Region study by far, with the next lowest scoring company outscoring Infinity by 53 points (5.3%).

Here is how Infinity rated in the California region for the five factors used to determine its overall auto insurance customer satisfaction score in 2015:

Policy Offerings: Two Power Circles (lowest rating)

Price: Two Power Circles (lowest rating)

Billing & Payment: Two Power Circles (lowest rating)

Interaction: Two Power Circles (lowest rating)

Claims: Two Power Circles (lowest rating)

Overall Customer Satisfaction: Two Power Circles (lowest rating)

These companies scored 5.3% or more higher than Infinity in the 2015 California Region study (from highest scoring company to lowest scoring company): USAA, Wawanesa, Hartford, Auto Club of Southern California, Ameriprise, State Farm, Esurance, GEICO, Progressive, Allstate, CSAA, Farmers, Safeco, Nationwide, Liberty Mutual, 21st Century, Mercury, and Travelers.

These companies scored lower than Infinity in the 2015 California Region study (from highest scoring company to lowest scoring company): None.

2014: Infinity was not included in the California region of the 2014 JD Power Auto Insurance Customer Satisfaction Study.

2013: Infinity scored 93 points (on a 1,000 point scale) or 9.3% below the 2013 California region average, at 684 out of 1,000 points. Infinity was the lowest scoring company in the 2013 California study, with the next lowest scoring company, Farmers, scoring 53 points or 5.3% above Infinity.

These companies scored 9.6% or more higher than Infinity in the 2013 California Region study: USAA, Wawanesa, State Farm, The Hartford, Auto Club of Southern California, GEICO, Ameriprise, Safeco, Progressive, CSAA/AAA NCNU, Allstate, and Liberty Mutual.

These companies scored lower than Infinity in the 2013 California Region study: None.

2012: Infinity scored 80 points (on a 1,000 point scale) or 8% below the 2012 California region average, at 705 out of 1,000 points. Infinity was the lowest scoring company in the 2012 California study as it was in 2013, with the next lowest scoring company (same as 2013), Farmers, scoring 49 points or 4.9% above Infinity.

These companies scored 8.1% or more higher than Infinity in the 2012 California Region study: USAA, Wawanesa, Auto Club of Southern California, State Farm, GEICO, The Hartford, Ameriprise, and Safeco.

These companies scored lower than Infinity in the 2012 California Region study: None.

California Region Auto Insurance Satisfaction Summary: Infinity scored 8%, 9.3%, and 8.8% below the region average each year in the 2012, 2013, & 2015 studies respectively, showing a trend of way below average auto insurance customer satisfaction in California.

Florida Region (State of FL Only)

2015: Infinity was not included in the Florida region of the 2015 JD Power Auto Insurance Customer Satisfaction Study.

2014: Infinity was not included in the Florida region of the 2014 JD Power Auto Insurance Customer Satisfaction Study.

2013: Infinity scored 55 points (on a 1,000 point scale) or 5.5% below the 2013 Florida region average, at 735 out of 1,000 points. Infinity was the lowest scoring company in the 2013 Florida study, with the next lowest scoring company, Esurance, scoring 25 points or 2.5% above Infinity.

These companies scored 5.3% or more higher than Infinity in the 2013 Florida Region study: USAA, Metlife, The Hartford, State Farm, Auto-Owners, Allstate, Progressive, and GEICO.

These companies scored lower than Infinity in the 2013 Florida Region study: None.

2012: Florida did not have its own regional study, and was included in the Southeast region study in 2012. Infinity was not included in the 2012 SE region study.

Florida Region Auto Insurance Satisfaction Summary: Infinity scored 5.5% below the region average each year in the 2013 Florida region study. Although we know about only one year’s performance in Florida two years ago, Infinity’s 2013 score & lowest ranking in Florida respectively is consistent with its performance in California for 2012, 2013, & 2015, showing way below average auto insurance customer satisfaction in Florida.

3. Infinity Insurance Group Auto Insurance Complaint Statistics & Ratings

Do positive or negative customer reviews help you choose a better auto or home insurance company? Can customer reviews at least help you avoid insurance companies with poor customer service? You may really like your automobile insurance company, or you may have heard from relatives or friends about the insurance companies they think are better or worse than others, but you never really know how good your insurance company will be, until you have a serious claim. The good news is many insurance companies settle a good portion of their claims in a manner acceptable to the majority of their customers. However, the wise consumer should avoid insurance companies with a worse than average history of auto or home insurance complaints.

The most common reasons, for people to file auto insurance complaints with a state insurance department against insurance companies, are for delays in a claim payment, unsatisfactory payment of a claim, and denial of a claim. This section of the Infinity review provides valuable information to help you decide if any one of the companies making up the Infinity Property & Casualty Corporation is best for you. By choosing a company with a better-than-average complaint history, or at least avoiding companies with consistent, worse-than-average complaint records, you decrease the likelihood you will have a negative experience, when you need your auto insurance company.

Infinity Group has ten subsidiary companies actively insuring private passenger vehicles in the states where the company sells auto insurance. The use of more than one auto insurance subsidiary company is usually to offer different pricing to specific risk profiles (for example, drivers with a clean driving record vs. drivers with tickets and accidents), operate in a certain US state or group of states, or for selling through different sales channels, such as buying direct from the company or buying from an independent insurance agency. Each subsidiary has its own rates, so if you receive auto insurance quotes direct from the company and from an independent insurance agent, the prices are likely to be different. To my knowledge, Infinity sells auto insurance only through independent insurance agents.

Infinity Preferred Insurance Company had only $628 in 2012 US auto insurance premiums (now $0 for 2013 & 2014), Infinity Reserve Insurance Company had $0 in 2012 US auto insurance premiums (No data found for the subsidiary as of 2014), & Infinity Security Insurance Company had $3,059 in 2012 US auto insurance premiums (Now $0 for 2013 & 2014). These Infinity companies no longer have any auto insurance customers, and do not appear to be selling auto insurance, so they are not included in this complaints analysis.

The auto insurance complaint statistics for the Infinity companies listed below are calculated by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and display the ratio of the company’s U.S. market share of closed complaints compared to its U.S. market share of premiums for a specific policy type. Complaint ratios lower than “1” have less complaints than average, and complaint ratios over “1” have more complaints than average. The lower the complaint ratio, the less complaints against the company. Ideally, you want to choose an insurance company with complaint ratios much less than 1.00 each year, over the last three years.

So you don’t have to worry about comparing complaint ratio numbers, I devised a rating system to help you identify if an Infinity subsidiary has a good or poor complaint record.

Here’s how I establish my auto insurance complaint ratings:

B = Better than average. Insurance companies with complaint ratios less than 75% of the average insurance company.

C = Average. Insurance companies with complaint ratios from 75% to 125% of the average insurance company.

W = Worse than average. Insurance companies with complaint ratios more than 125% of the average insurance company.

Infinity auto insurance complaint record considering all subsidiaries:

Worse than average

The good news is some of the Infinity subsidiaries had large increases in auto insurance market share over the last three years, which may mean competitive rates for nonstandard auto insurance customers. The bad news is, for many Infinity subsidiaries, the auto insurance complaint ratios are much worse than competing companies.

2009 Auto Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (.72)

Hillstar Insurance Company is available in Alabama & California only, but it is a small auto insurance subsidiary, not having much auto insurance market share in either state.

The Hillstar Insurance Company subsidiary has a higher than average number of auto insurance complaints each year from 2011-2014. Although the company had less than the average number of auto insurance complaints for 2009 & 2010, the complaint record for the most recent years are more relevant.

The auto insurance market share for Hillstar Insurance Company has decreased a lot each year since 2011, which may be an indication Hillstar Insurance Company no longer has competitive pricing for its auto insurance in Alabama and/or California. There was a huge drop in market share for this subsidiary from 2013 to 2014, with Hillstar now having very few auto insurance customers, so this subsidiary may be in the process of being phased out, and may be canceling its customers auto insurance policies on their expiration date.

Although the company had less than the average number of auto insurance complaints for 2010, 2011 & 2013, I prefer to see an insurance company consistently have its number of complaints less than the industry average each year. The auto insurance market share for Infinity County Mutual Insurance Company increased from 2013 to 2014, which may be an indication Infinity County Mutual Insurance Company now has more competitive pricing for its auto insurance in Texas.

Infinity Safeguard Insurance Company is available in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, & Utah, but it is an extremely small subsidiary, with little auto insurance market share in any of these states.

The Infinity Safeguard Insurance Company had no auto insurance complaints in 2009, 2010, & 2011. The subsidiary had only one auto insurance complaint each year for 2012 & 2013, and two complaints in 2014, but because of its small size, these one or two complaints per year resulted in worse-than-average auto insurance complaint ratios. The auto insurance market share for Infinity Safeguard Insurance Company decreased from 2013 to 2014, which may be an indication Infinity Safeguard Insurance Company does not have competitive pricing for its auto insurance, in at least some of the states where it sells auto insurance.

Infinity Standard Insurance Company is available in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Vermont, Wisconsin, & Wyoming, but it is a very small subsidiary, with very little auto insurance market share in any state.

The Infinity Standard Insurance Company has worse-than-average auto insurance complaint ratios in 2009, 2012, 2013 & 2014, with its number of auto insurance complaints at 480% of the industry average for 2012. Infinity Standard Insurance Company is a very small subsidiary, giving it higher complaint ratios when it gets a few complaints. But the subsidiary received enough complaints in 2012 & 2013, to say it truly has a worse than average complaint record, even considering its small size. Although Infinity Standard Insurance Company received no auto insurance complaints in 2010 & 2011, the complaint record for the most recent years are more relevant.
