Progressive Home Insurance Review: Multi-Year Customer Complaint Statistics

People having purchased home insurance from Progressive, are usually insured with another insurance company, such as Homesite Insurance Group, IDS Property Casualty Insurance Company, or another property insurance company, where Progressive serves as an agent, instead of the company insuring the home. But at one time, Progressive sold home insurance through some of its subsidiaries. Although Progressive has an extremely small share of the US home insurance market, there are still homes insured by Progressive now.

This Progressive Home Insurance review will evaluate, for the most recent six year period where reliable statistics are available (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, & 2014), the home insurance complaint ratings for the subsidiary companies of Progressive Insurance still insuring homes, to determine whether each subsidiary, such as Progressive Casualty Insurance Company, has a better-than-average, average, or worse-than-average customer complaint record. I’ll compare the home insurance complaint records for the Progressive subsidiary companies insuring homes, with their major competitors, such as State Farm, Allstate, and Farmers Insurance.

Can positive or negative customer reviews help you choose a better home insurance company? Do customer reviews at least help you avoid home insurance companies with the worst customer service? You may really like your insurance company, or you may have been told by relatives or friends about the home insurance companies they think are best, but you never really know how good your insurance company will be, until you have a serious claim. The good news is many homeowners insurance companies settle a good portion of their claims in a manner acceptable to the majority of their customers. However, the wise consumer should avoid insurance companies with a worse than average history of home insurance complaints.

The most common reasons, for people to file home insurance complaints with a state insurance department against insurance companies, are for delays in a claim payment, unsatisfactory payment of a claim, and denial of a claim. The complaint statistics used in this Progressive home insurance review are the number of upheld complaints filed against the Progressive companies with a state’s insurance regulatory authority, adjusted for each company’s market share, as determined by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

This review provides valuable information to help you decide if Progressive is best for you. By choosing a company with a better-than-average complaint history, or at least avoiding companies with consistent, worse-than-average complaint records, you decrease the likelihood you will have a negative experience, when you need your homeowners insurance company.

Progressive Home Insurance Customer Complaints Review

Progressive insures homes through the six subsidiary companies with their home insurance complaint statistics listed below. The use of more than one home insurance subsidiary company is usually to offer different pricing to specific risk profiles (high risk versus standard or preferred risk), sell through different distribution channels (for example, independent agents or direct from the company), or operate in a certain US state or group of states.

Although some of the subsidiaries below have growing home insurance market share from 2013 to 2014 (while others are close to having no homeowners insurance customers now), they have very small market shares, and Progressive homeowners insurance has very limited availability. However, this review should be helpful to current Progressive home insurance customers insured with these subsidiaries.

Progressive is now the majority stockholder of ARX Holding Corp., the parent company of American Strategic Insurance (ASI) and its affiliates, a major insurer of homes in the USA. ASI sells its home insurance through local independent insurance agencies and direct from Progressive in 25 U.S. states. Now that Progressive has controlling interest (67%) in ASI, with plans to purchase all remaining shares in the future, ASI may become the main home insurance company Progressive offers to its auto insurance customers as an auto/home insurance bundling option.

Progressive Preferred Insurance Company Home Insurance Complaint Statistics & Ratings

2010 Home Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (0) (No complaints)

2010 US home insurance premium = $1,237,055

2009 Home Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (0) (No complaints)

Progressive Preferred Insurance Company had only one home insurance complaint each year in 2011, 2012, 2013, & 2014, but due to its extremely small share of the home insurance market, the one complaint resulted in worse than average complaint ratios in each of those years. Based on its big drop in size from 2013 to 2014, it may be non-renewing its few homeowners insurance customers.

Progressive Southeastern Insurance Company Home Insurance Complaint Statistics & Ratings

B = Better than Average C = Average W = Worse than Average

2014 Home Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (0) (No complaints)

2014 US home insurance premium = $6,192,258

2010 Home Insurance Complaint Ratio = W (2.05)

2010 US home insurance premium = $4,439,263

2009 Home Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (0) (No complaints)

Progressive Southeastern Insurance Company has a worse than average home insurance complaint record in four of the last six years, with its number of home insurance complaints in its worst year during this period, at 1,066% of the industry average. Progressive Southeastern Insurance Company has, like all the Progressive subsidiaries, a very small share of the home insurance market, so in years like 2010 & 2013, only one home insurance complaint gave it a worse than average complaint ratio. However, Progressive Southeastern Insurance Company home insurance complaint record is consistently worse than average each year, and in some years, has many more than one home insurance complaint.

Progressive Specialty Insurance Company Home Insurance Complaint Statistics & Ratings

B = Better than Average C = Average W = Worse than Average

2014 Home Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (0) (No complaints)

2014 US home insurance premium = $10,022,748

2013 Home Insurance Complaint Ratio = W (12.53) (Only one complaint)

2013 US home insurance premium = $869,228

2012 Home Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (0) (No complaints)

2012 US home insurance premium = No home insurance policies in force

Progressive Specialty Insurance Company was added to this review when adding the 2014 complaint data, because of its significant increase in US home insurance premium for 2014. Looking at its change in market share it looks like this subsidiary started offering homeowners insurance in 2013. Progressive Specialty Insurance Company had only one home insurance complaint in 2013 but due to its extremely small share of the home insurance market in that year, the one complaint resulted in a worse than average complaint ratio.

Progressive Universal Insurance Company Home Insurance Complaint Statistics & Ratings
B = Better than Average C = Average W = Worse than Average

2014 Home Insurance Complaint Ratio = W (107.04) (Only 1 complaint)

2014 US home insurance premium = $86,140

2013 Home Insurance Complaint Ratio = W (2.87) (Only 1 complaint)

2010 Home Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (0) (No complaints)

2010 US home insurance premium = $3,193,395

2009 Home Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (0) (No complaints)

Progressive Universal Insurance Company had no home insurance complaints from 2009 to 2012, and only one home insurance complaint each year in 2013 & 2014, but due to its extremely small share of the home insurance market, the one complaint resulted in a worse than average complaint ratio. Based on its big drop in home insurance market size from 2013 to 2014, Progressive Universal Insurance Company may be non-renewing its few homeowners insurance customers.

If your home is insured with one of the Progressive subsidiary companies in this review, do not cancel your Progressive home insurance policy after switching to another home insurer, until you are sure you no longer want the Progressive policy, because you may not be able to reinstate it, or buy a new policy from the Progressive subsidiary, once it’s cancelled.
