Travelers Review: Auto / Homeowners Insurance Price Competitiveness, AM Best Financial Strength Ratings & Complaints 2009-2014

This Travelers Insurance review will evaluate, for the most recent six year period where reliable statistics are available (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, & 2014), the home & auto insurance complaint record for the subsidiary companies of Travelers insurance group, to determine whether each subsidiary, such as Travelers Home & Marine Insurance Company or Standard Fire Insurance Company, has a better-than-average, average, or worse-than-average customer complaint record.

I’ll also look at the JD Power ratings for Travelers auto & homeowner insurance pricing, and increases & decreases in market share (as measured by annual written premiums) for each Travelers subsidiary, as a possible indication of high or low insurance rates. In addition, I’ll review the AM Best Financial Strength Ratings for the Travelers insurance companies, too.

Travelers Auto & Home Insurance Customer Complaints, Pricing, & Ratings Review

The Travelers Insurance companies sell auto & home insurance in most of the US states, through a network of 13,000 independent insurance agent offices located throughout the USA. Auto insurance price quotes can be obtained through the Travelers website, or by using the ads at the top and bottom of this review.

This Travelers Insurance review is divided into four sections, consisting of: 1. AM Best Financial Strength Ratings for the Travelers insurance companies, 2. its auto insurance customer complaint record, 3. its home insurance customer complaint record, and 4. the competitiveness of Travelers auto & home insurance rates compared to other major auto & home insurance companies.

1. AM Best Financial Strength Ratings for the Travelers insurance companies

The following Travelers subsidiaries (excluding the St. Paul & American Equity brands): Automobile Insurance Company of Hartford, Connecticut; Charter Oak Fire Insurance Company; Discover Property & Casualty Insurance Company; Discover Specialty Insurance Company; Farmington Casualty Company; Fidelity and Guaranty Insurance Underwriters, Inc.; Fidelity and Guaranty Insurance Company; Gulf Underwriters Insurance Company; Northfield Insurance Company; Northland Casualty Company; Northland Insurance Company; Phoenix Insurance Company; Select Insurance Company; Standard Fire Insurance Company; TravCo Insurance Company; Travelers Casualty Company; Travelers Casualty Company of Connecticut; Travelers Casualty Insurance Company of America; Travelers Casualty and Surety Company of America; Travelers Casualty and Surety Company; Travelers Commercial Casualty Company; Travelers Commercial Insurance Company; Travelers Constitution State Insurance Company; Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company; Travelers Home and Marine Insurance Company; Travelers Indemnity Company of America; Travelers Indemnity Company; Travelers Indemnity Company of Connecticut; Travelers Lloyds Insurance Company; Travelers Lloyds of Texas Insurance Company; Travelers Personal Insurance Company; Travelers Personal Security Insurance Company; Travelers Property Casualty Company of America; Travelers Property Casualty Insurance Company; and United States Fidelity and Guaranty Company had their A++ (Superior) AM Best Financial Strength Rating with a stable outlook (no ratings upgrade or downgrade is expected in the near future) affirmed on 5/28/2015, and they have maintained this rating since their rating was upgraded from A+ in 2014. A++ is the highest rating for AM Best.

The Travelers insurance subsidiary, Premier Insurance Company of Massachusetts, had its A (Excellent) AM Best Financial Strength Rating with a stable outlook (no ratings upgrade or downgrade is expected in the near future) affirmed on 5/28/2015, a rating it has maintained for six years or more. A is the third highest rating for AM Best.

The Travelers insurance subsidiary, First Floridian Auto and Home Insurance Company, had its A- (Excellent) AM Best Financial Strength Rating with a stable outlook (no ratings upgrade or downgrade is expected in the near future) affirmed on 5/28/2015, a rating it has maintained for six years or more. A- is the fourth highest rating for AM Best.

I become concerned with any automobile or homeowners insurance company or subsidiary not rated or with less than an A- rating for financial strength from AM Best.

AM Best financial strength ratings are not a measure of customer service or the quality of the claims adjusting for any of the Travelers companies, but an opinion about their ability to pay claims, remain financially solvent, and stay in business. I recommend avoiding, if possible or practical, any auto or homeowners insurance company with lower than an “A-” rating for financial strength from AM Best. Some major auto & home insurance companies have the same or lower financial strength ratings than the Travelers companies, but the difference in financial strength among A++, A+, A, & A- rated companies is not significant to me unless higher rated companies are the same or better in terms of price, coverage, claims handling, and customer service.

Travelers Auto & Homeowners Insurance Complaint Record 2009-2014

You may really like your car or home insurance company, or you may have heard from relatives or friends about the insurance companies they think are best, but you never really know how good your insurance company will be, until you have a serious claim. A great way to evaluate an auto or home insurance company’s claims service is to look at its customer complaint record.

A measure of quality for an auto or homeowners insurance company is the number of upheld complaints filed against it with a state’s insurance regulatory authority, compared to the industry average and competing companies. Some of the most common reasons, for people to file auto & home insurance complaints with a state insurance department against insurance companies, are for delays in a claim payment, unsatisfactory payment of a claim, and denial of a claim.

Sections #2 & #3 of this review will show you if Travelers auto & home insurance has a better-than-average, average, or below-average complaint record, based on its 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 & 2014 customer complaint statistics. These sections of the review provides valuable information, to help you decide if Travelers, or a competitor, like Allstate or Amica, is a better insurance company for you. By choosing a company with a better-than-average complaint history, or at least avoiding companies with consistent, worse-than-average complaint records, you decrease the likelihood you will have a negative experience, when you need your auto or home insurance company.

The complaint statistics, called complaint ratios, used in this Travelers Insurance review are the number of upheld complaints filed against each of the Travelers companies with a state’s insurance regulatory authority, adjusted for each subsidiary’s market share, as determined by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

The complaint ratios for the Travelers insurance companies listed below display the ratio of the company’s U.S. Market Share of closed complaints compared to the company’s U.S. Market Share of premiums for a specific policy type. Complaint ratios lower than “1” have less complaints than average, and complaint ratios over “1” have more complaints than average. The lower the complaint ratio, the less complaints against the company. Ideally, you want to choose an auto or home insurance company with complaint ratios less than 1.00 each year, at least over the most recent three years.

So you don’t have to worry about comparing complaint ratio numbers, I devised a rating system to help you identify if Travelers has a good or poor complaint record.

Here’s how I establish my auto & homeowners insurance complaint ratings:

B = Better than average. Insurance companies with complaint ratios less than 75% of the average insurance company.

C = Average. Insurance companies with complaint ratios from 75% to 125% of the average insurance company. I use a minus sign (-) to indicate auto insurance complaint ratios slightly worse than average (1.01 to 1.25) and a plus sign (+) for auto insurance complaint ratios slightly better than average (.99 to .75).

W = Worse than average. Insurance companies with complaint ratios more than 125% of the average insurance company.

I prefer companies with the longest recent history of “B” ratings each year (or at least in the most recent three years). Companies with “B” or “C+” ratings are okay, too, particularly if they have less market share, with less than $50,000,000 in premiums for that line of insurance (auto or home) each year. I prefer to avoid companies with a consistently higher than average number of complaints, or with inconsistent complaint records, unless there are mitigating factors, such as very small market share.

2. Travelers Auto Insurance Complaint Statistics & Ratings

Travelers auto insurance complaint record considering all subsidiaries:

Better than average

Travelers has twenty subsidiary companies insuring private passenger vehicles in the USA. The use of more than one auto or home insurance subsidiary company is usually to offer different pricing to specific risk profiles (for example, drivers with a clean driving record vs. drivers with tickets and accidents), operate in a certain US state or group of states, or offer different lines of insurance, such as motorhome or motorcycle insurance.

Most of the Travelers subsidiaries have small and/or shrinking auto insurance market shares, which may be a sign these Travelers subsidiaries no longer have competitive auto insurance rates.

However, Travelers launched a new auto insurance product in 2013 with more competitive pricing, and it may be a very good option for some auto insurance consumers. Be aware some agents may be reluctant to sell or recommend the new auto insurance product from Travelers, because it has lower commissions.

These Travelers subsidiaries have doubled their auto insurance market share over the last two years, which may be a sign of competitive auto insurance rates: Automobile Insurance Company of Hartford, CT (its US auto insurance market share doubled from 2012 to 2013, and is up slightly in 2014), Standard Fire Insurance Company, Travelers Personal Insurance Company (licensed in Illinois, Missouri, New York, and Pennsylvania only), and Travelers Property & Casualty Company.

Which Travelers auto insurance subsidiaries are available to you may depend on the state in which you live, if you get a quote direct from the company, or different independent insurance agents, and other factors. You may be eligible for multiple subsidiaries. Each subsidiary has its own rates, so the price for auto insurance with the same coverage will most likely differ among subsidiary companies.

The Travelers subsidiaries, Travelers Casualty Insurance Company of America (with only $1,066 in 2014 US auto insurance premiums) and Northland Insurance Company (with only $6,810 in 2012 US auto insurance premiums, $2,277 in 2013, and now $1,198 in 2014), have too few auto insurance customers, to be included in this auto insurance complaints section of my review. My auto insurance complaint ratings for the remaining 19 Travelers subsidiaries insuring personal use autos & trucks are shown below.

Here is the auto insurance complaint data for each Travelers subsidiary:

3. Travelers Home Insurance Complaint Statistics & Ratings

Travelers home insurance complaint record considering all subsidiaries:

Average

Travelers Insurance Group sells home insurance through the nineteen subsidiary companies listed below. Almost all of the Travelers subsidiaries have flat or shrinking US homeowners insurance market share, which may be a sign many of them do not have competitive home insurance rates. Of the subsidiaries, only Travelers Commercial Insurance Company and Travelers Home & Marine Insurance Company have strong home insurance market share growth, possibly due to lower home insurance rates.

Travelers Home & Marine Insurance Company is the Travelers subsidiary with the largest US home insurance market share (about twice as big as the Travelers company with the next largest home insurance market share), and it’s had a large growth in home insurance customers over the last four years, which may mean this Travelers subsidiary is likely to have competitive homeowners insurance rates.

Which Travelers home insurance subsidiaries are available to you may depend on the state in which you live, if you get a quote from the company, or different independent insurance agents, and other factors. You may be eligible for multiple subsidiaries. Each subsidiary has its own rates, so the home insurance price for the same coverage will most likely vary among subsidiary companies.

Here is the home insurance complaint data for each Travelers subsidiary:
