Louisiana Auto Insurance Reviews 2013: The Major Companies, their Customer Complaint Records, & JD Power Ratings

As frequent readers of my insurance company review blog know, some car insurance companies charge more than double as much as other car insurance companies for the same coverage. No single auto insurance company has competitive rates for all drivers. The only way to find the company with the best auto insurance rates for you, is to shop with all the leading car insurance companies. But the average person is usually not aware of all the major auto insurance companies in their state.

This review will show you the 20 biggest auto insurance companies in Louisiana (covering over 89% of the LA auto insurance market), ranking them from best to worst based on their complaint records, and let you know if they have an above-average, average, or below-average customer complaint record over the last three years (2012, 2011, & 2010). I’ll also show you their JD Power auto claims & customer satisfaction ratings over the last three years (2013, 2012, & 2011), & each company’s growth or loss of auto insurance market share in Louisiana, which can be an indicator of low rates or high rates for a broad base of customers. I’ll also give you the names of a few popular auto insurance companies, outside the top 20, losing or gaining significant market share in Louisiana, to help you find low rates with the growing companies, or inform you if your car insurance company is losing customers.

Reading this review of the major Louisiana auto insurance companies can help you shop and find the companies most likely to save you a lot of cash, or let you know if you may be paying too much for the auto insurance you have now. Bookmark this review, because I will update it or write a new review, as new data becomes available in the future. If you are a Louisiana car insurance consumer, there is no better source on the Web than this blog review, to help you shop for a good auto insurance company, get the coverage you need at a competitive price, and really save hundreds of dollars per year.

The Top Twenty Largest Auto Insurance Companies in Louisiana, Ranked from Best to Worst by their 2012, 2011, & 2010 Complaint Ratings (listed in order of size).

These largest LA car insurance companies are determined by the amount of premium they collect in Louisiana for auto insurance each year. The Louisiana Department of Insurance is my source of LA auto insurance market share & written premium for these companies. I use the national 2012, 2011, 2010 complaint ratios for each auto insurance company in this review, from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners website, to assign my complaint ratings.

The auto insurance complaint ratios compare the company’s U.S. market share of closed complaints to the company’s U.S. market share of premiums for auto insurance. Complaint ratios lower than “1″ have less complaints than average, and complaint ratios over “1″ have more complaints than average.

The complaint ratios are numerical scores, & may not be easy to understand at a glance. I devised a rating system, giving grades to companies based on the complaint ratios, to make it easier to compare companies, find the best car insurance companies, and avoid the insurance companies with a consistently worse-than-average complaint record.

The importance of market share change

In this review, an auto insurance company’s market share change is measured by the change in the amount of auto insurance premium it collects each year. A big reduction in car insurance premium collected from year to year can be an indication an auto insurance company’s rates are too high, and customers are leaving to insure with other auto insurance companies. A big increase in the amount of auto insurance premium collected might mean sales growth due to competitive rates.

You can get price quotes or find local agents by going to each insurance company’s website, which for many of the auto insurance companies discussed here, can be reached through the ads in this review. For those few companies not likely to advertise, I’ll give you their web address.

Attention: Insurance companies often have several subsidiary auto insurance companies. For example, Allstate Insurance Company does not sell new auto insurance policies, but Allstate Fire & Casualty Insurance Company does sell new auto insurance policies. Government Employees Insurance Company is the GEICO subsidiary only available to government employees & other specified types of employees. Some auto insurance companies will quote you a different subsidiary based on your driving record. Make sure you know the correct name of the insurance subsidiary company quoting or insuring you, to check the proper complaint rating.

1. State Farm Insurance

Complaint Record Ranking (Best to Worst): #2

State Farm has two subsidiary companies, insuring a large number of privately owned vehicles in Louisiana, included in this review:

State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company Auto Insurance Complaint Statistics & Ratings

B = Better than Average C = Average W = Worse than Average

2012 Auto Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (.41)

2011 Auto Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (.35)

2010 Auto Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (.34)

Market share change: State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company’s share of the Louisiana auto insurance market has remained flat, very slightly increasing to 30.47%, from 30.39%. In Louisiana, like most US states, State Farm has a much larger market share than other companies, and this has been the case for decades. However, don’t think State Farm’s outsized market share is due to having the best rates. For most people, if they are happy with the service, they won’t shop for better rates. This is why many people pay too much for auto insurance.

State Farm Fire & Casualty Company Auto Insurance Complaint Statistics & Ratings

B = Better than Average C = Average W = Worse than Average

2012 Auto Insurance Complaint Ratio = C (.81)

2011 Auto Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (.64)

2010 Auto Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (.61)

Market share change: State Farm Fire & Casualty Company’s share of the Louisiana auto insurance market has decreased to 2.21%, from 2.34%.

Customer Satisfaction: For the JD Power 2013 US Auto Insurance Customer Satisfaction Study (Southeast region, including the state of LA), State Farm received the rating of 4 power circles (better than most), and scored 822 points on the 1,000 point scale, which is 18 points (1.8%) higher than the regional study’s average of 804 out of 1,000 points. In 2012, State Farm scored 821 out of 1,000 points (the regional average was 814 points) earning the top rating of five power circles (among the best), and in 2011, State Farm scored 804 out of 1,000 points in the JD Power national study (the study average was 790 points), earning the company a four power circle rating (better than most).

Claims Satisfaction: For the annual JD Power US Auto Claims Satisfaction Study, State Farm scored 868 out of 1,000 points (the study average was 852 points) for 2012, and 878 out of 1,000 points (the study average was 846 points) for 2011, awarding it the rating of 4 power circles (better than most) for 2011 & 2012.

2. Progressive Insurance

Complaint Record Ranking (Best to Worst): #3

Progressive also has two subsidiary companies on the list, which may be because it has a company for selling auto insurance direct from the company and a company sold through independent insurance agents, at different rates.

Progressive Security Insurance Company Auto Insurance Complaint Statistics & Ratings

B = Better than Average C = Average W = Worse than Average

2012 Auto Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (.22)

Market share change: Progressive Security Insurance Company’s share of the Louisiana auto insurance market has increased slightly to 10.72%, from 10.42%.

2010 Auto Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (.42)

Market share change: Progressive Paloverde Insurance Company’s share of the Louisiana auto insurance market has increased slightly to 3.12%, from 3.02%.

Customer Satisfaction: For the JD Power 2013 US Auto Insurance Customer Satisfaction Study (Southeast region, including the state of LA), Progressive received the lowest rating of two power circles (the rest), and scored 791 points on the 1,000 point scale, which is 13 points (1.3%) lower than the regional study’s average of 804 out of 1,000 points. In 2012, Progressive scored 796 out of 1,000 points (the regional average was 814 points) also earning the lowest rating of two power circles. In 2011, Progressive scored 785 out of 1,000 points in the JD Power national study (the study average was 790 points), earning the company a three power circle rating (about average).

3. Allstate Insurance

Complaint Record Ranking (Best to Worst): #4

Allstate also has two subsidiary auto insurance companies large enough for this review. I suspect the Allstate Insurance Company subsidiary is what’s referred to as a “closed book off business,” continuing to insure many Louisiana auto insurance customers, but not selling new auto insurance policies. This is probably also true of Allstate Property & Casualty Insurance Company. The newest Allstate subsidiary, Allstate Fire & Casualty Insurance Company, sells new auto insurance policies.

Allstate Property & Casualty Insurance Company Auto Insurance Complaint Statistics & Ratings

B = Better than Average C = Average W = Worse than Average

2012 Auto Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (.45)

2011 Auto Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (.44)

Market share change: Allstate Property & Casualty Insurance Company’s share of the Louisiana auto insurance market has increased to 6.10% in 2012, from 5.69% in 2011. If this Allstate subsidiary is selling new policies, this increase in market share may indicate lower rates.

Allstate Insurance Company Auto Insurance Complaint Statistics & Ratings

B = Better than Average C = Average W = Worse than Average

2012 Auto Insurance Complaint Ratio = C (.80)

2011 Auto Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (.68)

2010 Auto Insurance Complaint Ratio = C (.96)

Market share change: Allstate Insurance Company’s share of the Louisiana auto insurance market has decreased to 5.06% in 2012, from 5.53% in 2011. This market share decrease may indicate uncompetitive rates.

Customer Satisfaction: For the JD Power 2013 US Auto Insurance Customer Satisfaction Study (Southeast region, including the state of LA), Allstate received the lowest rating of two power circles (the rest), and scored 790 points on the 1,000 point scale, which is 14 points (1.4%) lower than the regional study’s average of 804 out of 1,000 points. In 2012, Allstate scored 806 out of 1,000 points (the regional average was 814 points) earning the “about average” rating of three power circles. In 2011, Allstate scored 781 out of 1,000 points in the JD Power national study (the study average was 790 points), earning the company a three power circle rating (about average).

Claims Satisfaction: For the annual JD Power US Auto Claims Satisfaction Study, Allstate scored 863 out of 1,000 points (the study average was 852 points), awarding it four power circles (better than most) for 2012, and 834 out of 1,000 points (the study average was 846 points), earning it the rating of three power circles (about average) for 2011.

Customer Satisfaction: Louisiana Farm Bureau was not included in the most recent or previous annual JD Power Auto Insurance Customer Satisfaction studies.

6. GEICO Insurance

Complaint Record Ranking (Best to Worst): #5

GEICO has four subsidiary auto insurance companies big enough to be included in this review:

GEICO General Insurance Company Auto Insurance Complaint Statistics & Ratings

B = Better than Average C = Average W = Worse than Average

2012 Auto Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (.51)

2011 Auto Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (.45)

2010 Auto Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (.50)

Market share change: GEICO General Insurance Company’s share of the Louisiana auto insurance market decreased to 2.80% in 2012, from 3.10% in 2011. This market share change is almost a 10% decrease, and may indicate uncompetitive rates, or rewriting customers in GEICO Casualty (see below).

GEICO Casualty Company Auto Insurance Complaint Statistics & Ratings

B = Better than Average C = Average W = Worse than Average

2012 Auto Insurance Complaint Ratio = W (1.29)

2011 Auto Insurance Complaint Ratio = W (1.91)

2010 Auto Insurance Complaint Ratio = W (1.64)

Market share change: GEICO Casualty Company’s share of the Louisiana auto insurance market had a HUGE increase to $67,286,798 in written premium for 2012, from $14,747,459 in written premium for 2011. This market share change is an increase of more than 300%! Based on the higher complaint ratios, I believe GEICO Casualty to have been the nonstandard auto insurance subsidiary in LA (for people with tickets, accidents, or issues keeping them from qualifying for standard auto insurance), but this extremely large change in market share has me thinking this subsidiary has been repurposed to insure all types of drivers. If you are shopping for better auto insurance rates, you can’t leave out checking GEICO auto insurance rates. But if you are insured with GEICO, shop with other companies, to make sure any change at GEICO is not leaving you with higher auto insurance rates.
