New Jersey Home Insurance Reviews 2013: Complaint Ratings for all the Leading Companies

This NJ Home insurance company review gives you the 2012, 2011 & 2010 complaint ratings for the major companies insuring homes in the Garden State. It’s tough to find reliable insurance company reviews on the Web. Reading reviews of several people’s experience, or even two hundred people’s experience, are not enough to evaluate an insurance company with hundreds of thousands of customers, and tell you what your experience is likely to be with the company, if you insure with them. One person will love a company. Another person will hate the same company the other person loves. Unfortunately, no amount of research about a company’s customer service can guarantee you won’t have a problem. Even the most highly rated companies for customer satisfaction will have customers thinking they were treated unfairly, or the company did not properly settle a claim for them.

However, a smart insurance buyer reduces the chances of having a bad experience, by checking an insurance company’s JD Power ratings and complaint statistics for the company, before insuring with them. Although some states publish insurance company complaint statistics on their websites, few consumers check for their availability. New Jersey does not publish their home insurance complaint statistics, but national complaint data about the insurance companies insuring homes in NJ is available. This review will tell you if these NJ home insurance companies have an above-average, average, or below-average customer complaint record over the last three years, and their JD Power ratings, if they were included in a JD Power home insurance claims or customer satisfaction survey in the last three years (2013, 2012, & 2011).

Reading this review, and using it to select an home insurance company, can’t guarantee you will get great service or be happy with how your next claim is settled, but it gives you the information you need in one place, to help you make a smarter decision when choosing an home insurance company. How is your home insurance company performing? Check your company’s ratings in this review below.

It’s important to choose an homeowners insurance company with a good complaint record, but the most important reason you must shop your homeowners insurance is to get the proper insurance coverage. You need to adequately protect the biggest asset most people own — your home — and home insurance coverage options can be VERY different among insurance companies. You should shop your homeowners insurance every year, as you should with your auto insurance. Check the rates and coverage of ALL the leading homeowners insurance companies, so you can get the best combination of cost, coverage, and customer service. Agents who know how coverage differs among homeowners insurance companies will be a great source of information to you.

The New Jersey Department of Banking & Insurance website, and my website, are the sources of home insurance company information used in this review about the companies insuring homes in NJ. I use the national complaint ratio for each homeowners insurance company on my list, from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners website.

The home insurance complaint ratios show the relationship of a company’s U.S. market share of closed home, condo, mobile home, renters insurance complaints compared to the company’s U.S. market share of premiums for these specific policy types. Complaint ratios lower than “1” have less complaints than average, and complaint ratios over “1” have more complaints than average. The lower the complaint ratio, the less complaints against the company. The higher the complaint ratio, the more complaints against the company. However, companies with very small market shares can have high complaint ratios with only 1 or 2 complaints. I indicate when a high complaint ratio is caused by only one complaint, and you should not disregard companies based on these complaint statistics alone.

The complaint ratios are number scores, & harder to compare at a glance. I devised a rating system, giving grades to companies based on the complaint ratios, to make it easier to compare companies, find the best home insurance companies, and avoid the worst insurance companies.

B = Better than average. Insurance companies with complaint ratios less than 75% of the average insurance company.

C = Average. Insurance companies with complaint ratios from 75% to 125% of the average insurance company.

W = Worse than average. Insurance companies with complaint ratios more than 125% of the average insurance company.

Consider these ratings, along with price and other factors (as listed on my website), when choosing an homeowners insurance company.

A portion of the insurance companies on this list no longer sell new homeowners insurance policies. If you are insured with one of them, and decide to cancel your policy, you may not be likely to have it reinstated, if you change your mind. However, if your insurance company is rated poorly for complaints, changing home insurance companies might be in your best interest.
