Fireman’s Fund Insurance Review: Auto & Home Insurance Customer Complaint Statistics & Ratings

This Fireman’s Fund Insurance review will evaluate, for the most recent six year period where complaint statistics are available (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 & 2014), the home & auto insurance complaint ratings for the subsidiary companies of Fireman’s Fund insurance group, to determine whether each subsidiary, such as American Automobile Insurance Company or American Insurance Company, has a better-than-average, average, or worse-than-average customer complaint record. I’ll also compare the auto & home insurance complaint records for the Fireman’s Fund subsidiary companies, with major competitors, like Allstate, Progressive, GEICO, State Farm, & Farmers. Fireman’s Fund is a major insurer of high value & luxury homes.

Fireman’s Fund Auto & Homeowners Insurance Review

Fireman’s Fund sells auto & home insurance through independent insurance agencies located nationwide. If you are insured with a Fireman’s Fund subsidiary, or an independent insurance agent has recommended a Fireman’s Fund subsidiary to you, the complaint ratings in this review will be useful to you. However, if you are the average auto or home insurance customer, looking for a good or better insurance company, you probably can skip the Fireman’s Fund companies.

Fireman’s Fund, owned by the international insurance conglomerate, Allianz, is not a big player in the United States when it comes to auto & home insurance. Even Fireman’s Fund largest subsidiary, Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company, has a small share of the US auto and home insurance market compared to its competitors, and most of its other subsidiaries are extremely small. With the exception of National Surety Corporation, all the subsidiaries have lost home and auto insurance market share since 2010.

Fireman’s Fund largest line of personal insurance is homeowners insurance. If you are a high net worth individual, with a high value home, Fireman’s Fund may be a good choice for you. (Chubb, ACE, & AIG / Chartis, and Pure are companies also specializing in the needs of high value homeowners). Although the largest Fireman’s Fund home insurance subsidiaries have excellent complaint statistics, it may be these companies do not have competitive rates, as evidenced by their shrinking market share.

Updating this review for 2015, the auto, homeowners, and other personal insurance policies of Fireman’s Fund are in the process of being sold to a company called ACE, and barring regulatory disapproval, Fireman’s Fund customers will see their policies non-renew on their expiration date, most likely starting sometime in late 2015. Fireman’s Fund customers will receive an offer to insure with a subsidiary of the ACE Group, to replace their Fireman’s Fund policy.

If you have a high value home (worth one million dollars or more) or other high value property, you should consider a specialty insurer to properly cover your insurance needs, but I would not choose Fireman’s Fund due to the pending sale, if Fireman’s Fund is still selling new policies and agents are recommending it.

If you are insured with Fireman’s Fund now, you may want to consider other companies before your Fireman’s Fund policy expires. Yesterday, I wrote a new review of the auto & homeowners insurance customer complaint record for the ACE Group companies, like Bankers Standard Insurance Company, ACE Insurance Company of the Midwest, or Atlantic Employers Insurance Company, which may help you decide if you want to accept the ACE offer when your Fireman’s Fund policy expires. You can compare ACE with the complaint information I show below for Fireman’s Fund, to see if ACE has a better or worse complaint record.

When shopping for auto & home insurance, you want to include independent insurance agents representing the major companies selling through independent agents, like Travelers, Safeco, MetLife, etc. If you have a high value home or property, like a yacht, you want to include shopping with at least one independent insurance agent representing companies like Chubb, ACE, & AIG / Chartis, Pure, and other companies with insurance policies designed for the personal insurance needs of higher net worth individuals and families.

This Fireman’s Fund insurance companies review is divided into three sections, consisting of its: 1. auto insurance customer complaint ratings, 2. home insurance customer complaint ratings, and 3. and information about competing auto & home insurance companies, and how their complaint records compare to the Fireman’s Fund companies.

1. Fireman’s Fund Auto Insurance Complaint Statistics & Ratings

The most common reasons, for people to file auto & home insurance complaints with a state insurance department against insurance companies, are for delays in a claim payment, unsatisfactory payment of a claim, and denial of a claim. The complaint statistics used in this Fireman’s Fund insurance companies review are the number of upheld complaints filed against the Fireman’s Fund companies with a state’s insurance regulatory authority, adjusted for each subsidiary company’s market share, as determined by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

Fireman’s Fund has seven subsidiary companies licensed to insure private passenger vehicles in the states where the company sells auto insurance. The use of more than one auto or home insurance subsidiary company is usually to offer different pricing to specific risk profiles (for example, drivers with a clean driving record vs. drivers with tickets and accidents), operate in a certain US state or group of states, or offer different types of insurance products, such as a specific homeowners insurance product, or motorcycle insurance.

Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company of Hawaii Inc. had no auto insurance policies in force for 2013, and Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company of Ohio also had no auto insurance policies in force for 2013, so they are not included in this auto insurance complaints analysis. Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company of Louisiana, which I used to have listed as a subsidiary on my website, no longer seems to exist.

Here’s how I establish my auto insurance complaint ratings:
