Does your auto insurance company have a large amount of customer complaints? Will you have problems placing a claim, or have a valid claim delayed or denied? Is your insurance company really any good? Most consumers fail to check the complaint records of their auto & home insurance companies. This blog post provides complaint information for the 20 largest insurance companies insuring cars in West Virginia, & rates them based on their 2010 national complaint record (Accurate 2011 complaint records are not available yet). Know the best and worst companies!

I’m always blogging to help you get the best policies and prices for auto, homeowners, & life insurance, so bookmark or place my website in your favorites!

With my state reviews, I always like to use auto insurance complaint ratios collected by your state, to tell you if an insurance company has a better or worse complaint record in your state, compared to competing insurance companies.

Unfortunately, not every state’s insurance department provides complaint ratios. West Virginia does not have state complaint information available for the public.

A state’s department of insurance website is a good starting place to find out consumer information about insurance & insurance companies.

Here is the link to the West Virginia Office of the Insurance Commissioner Website, which I used as a resource to find the biggest auto insurance companies, including all companies with 1% or more of the West Virginia car insurance market.

As I mentioned earlier in this blog post, it helps to have insurance company complaint ratios, to fairly compare an insurance company’s complaint record with another insurance company’s complaint record.

I devised a letter grade system, using the national car insurance complaint ratios for the insurance companies listed, to make it easy to tell an insurance company with a great or good complaint record, from an insurance company with a poor or average complaint record.

Although I list the leading 20 companies, there are 154 companies insuring cars in West Virginia. Some of these companies are large national insurance companies with great reputations, Like Amica Mutual Insurance Company. The 20 leading companies may not be the companies with the best rates for you, so you should consider other companies not on the list below, too.

For additional information, visit my website to see more auto & home insurance complaint ratios, AM Best financial strength ratings, and JD Power customer satisfaction ratings & claims satisfaction ratings, for insurance companies, including insurance companies not on this list.

Here is my grading system. I also show the national car insurance complaint ratio (the lower the number the better the complaint record) for each company listed.

A+ = Insurance companies with complaints 25% or less than the average insurance company.

A = Insurance companies with complaints 50% or less than the average insurance company.

B = Insurance companies with complaints 90% or less than the average insurance company.

C = Insurance companies with complaints from 90% to 110% of the average insurance company.

D = Insurance companies with complaints from 110% to 200% of the average insurance company.

F = Insurance companies with complaints over 200% of the average insurance company. More than twice as much as average!

Consider these grades, along with price and other factors (as listed on my website), when choosing an auto insurance company.

Insurance companies frequently have several subsidiary insurance companies insuring autos in W. Virginia. For example, The Hartford owns both Hartford Insurance Company of the Midwest, and Property & Casualty Insurance Company of Hartford, in addition to other auto insurance subsidiaries not large enough to make this list. Make sure you know the correct name of the insurance subsidiary quoting or insuring you, to check the proper complaint grade. If your company is not on this list, check its complaint grade on my website.

If you want to decrease the chance of having a problem with your insurance company, go with the highest ranked auto insurance company — even if it costs more. The good news is the best insurance companies often have very good rates, and you can choose a better insurance company AND save money.

Here is the list. Remember to shop with as many companies as possible, so you can find the best rates, service, & coverage for you.
