Kansas Home Insurance Reviews: Complaint Ratings for Top 21 Companies

Does your homeowners insurance company have a lot of complaints? Will you have difficulty placing a claim, or have a valid claim delayed or denied? Do you know if your company is good or bad? Most consumers fail to check the complaint records of their insurance companies. Here I provide complaint information for 20 of the largest (by market share in Kansas, based on premium) home insurance companies and rank them, from best to worst, based on their 2010 record of Kansas home insurance complaints (Accurate 2011 data not available yet). Also included are complaint ratios for all other home insurance companies (one) with 10 or more Kansas complaints in 2010.I’m always blogging to help you get the best policies and prices for auto, home, & life insurance, so bookmark or place my website in your favorites!

The Kansas Insurance Department website is the source of my information about market share & complaint information. The Kansas complaint ratio is determined by the number of complaints per one million dollars of direct written home insurance premium. The ratio is used so you can compare the complaint records among insurance companies fairly.

For example, Safeco had .31 complaints per one million dollars of home insurance premium it collected in Kansas for 2010. Travelers Home & Marine Insurance had .72 complaints per one million dollars of home insurance premium it collected in Kansas for 2010, which is more than twice the number of complaints per one million dollars of premium than Safeco. But both of these companies have a much better 2010 complaint ratio than Farmers Insurance Company Inc., which at 1.20, is much higher than Safeco or Travelers.

The complaint ratio is important, because a home insurance company with a lot more customers is likely to have a larger number of complaints than a smaller insurance company, because it handles more customer transactions.

For example, a large insurance company may handle 2,000 fire claims, and have 2 valid complaints in regards to how these claims were handled. A smaller insurance company may have 200 fire claims, and only one valid complaint.

Even though the larger insurance company had twice the number of complaints than the smaller insurance company, the larger insurance company has 1 complaint per 1,000 claims, and the smaller company has 1 complaint per 200 claims. The larger insurance company really has the better complaint record.

The Kansas complaint ratio uses the number of Kansas homeowners insurance complaints per one million dollars of premium, so you can compare an insurance company’s complaint records with other companies fairly, regardless of the size of the companies.

Unlike the national complaint ratios on my website, each insurance company’s Kansas complaint ratio is not compared to an average number of complaints for the Kansas home insurance market. The Kansas complaint ratio is useful only when comparing insurance companies.

Using the example from above, Travelers has more than double the number of complaints than Safeco, but they are both pretty good complaint records, when compared with some of the other home insurance companies in Kansas.

You want to consider other factors, beyond one year’s complaint ratio, when deciding on an insurance company.

Insurance companies frequently have several subsidiary home insurance companies, and the name of the subsidiary may be different than the parent insurance group. For example, Allied Insurance Group includes Amco Insurance, as well as Allied Property & Casualty Insurance Company. Make sure you know the insurance group, and the name of the insurance subsidiary company quoting or insuring you, to check the proper complaint ratio.
