JD Power Customer & Claims Satisfaction Study Scores for U.S. Auto & Homeowners Insurance Companies 2012 – 2016

This review ranks the 2012-2016 JD power scores for over 30 leading auto & homeowners insurance companies in comparison to each other, so you can easily see which companies provide the best or worst auto or homeowner insurance rates, claims, and customer satisfaction over the years at a glance.

This review is divided into six sections to cover the different annual JD Power insurance studies, consisting of: 1. Company scores for auto insurance customer satisfaction, 2. Company scores for auto insurance claims satisfaction, 3. Company scores for homeowners insurance customer satisfaction, 4. Company scores for homeowners insurance claims satisfaction, 5. Companies with the best & worst satisfaction ratings for handling auto or homeowners insurance claims, 6. Companies with the best & worst auto or homeowners insurance rates.

I’ve been writing insurance company reviews & reporting about the annual JD Power customer & claims satisfaction studies rating auto & homeowners insurance companies for five years now, comparing each insurance company’s JD Power study scores over time and to competing companies. Looking at each company’s actual score, instead of its JD Power ratings, is important to know if it is really performing better or worse than other companies. For example, in the JD Power 2014 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study, Auto Club of Southern California received the rating of four power circles (better than most), while The Hartford received the rating of three power circles (about average), but Auto Club of SC scored 867 and Hartford scored 866 out of 1,000 possible points in the study, making their level of auto claims satisfaction almost identical. If a student takes a test, scores 86.6%, and receives a “C” grade, while another student scores 86.7% on the same test and receives a “B” grade, is the student getting only one more question correct on a 100-question test really a better student? If one student scores 90.2% and another student scores 82.7% should they both get the highest grade as if the performed the same? This was the case in the JD Power 2014 U.S. Auto Insurance Customer Satisfaction Study for the Florida region, where USAA scored 902 and The Hartford scored 827, but both companies received the highest JD Power rating of five power circles (among the best).

A high scoring auto or homeowners insurance company is a good sign, but you also want to look at the study scores over the last few years, to see if the company consistently scores well in recent years, to indicate you can expect the same level of customer & claims satisfaction now. A long history of high scores each year means an insurance company’s level of customer &/or claims satisfaction is more dependable.

It’s not possible for anyone to tell you the company with the best auto or homeowners insurance rates for you, without you shopping with all the companies in your state to find it yourself, because no insurance company has low rates for every type of customer. However, in the last section of this review, I’ll show you the companies rated the best & worst by JD Power for auto or homeowner insurance rates.

My reviews of each JD Power study each year, which you can read here, and my insurance company reviews, which you can read here, go into more detail about each insurance company’s performance in annual JD Power studies and their customer complaint statistics, but this review is a quick way to compare companies, as surveyed by their policyholders, for auto & homeowners customer service, claims, & pricing satisfaction over the years, showing their JD Power study scores as a percentage. It’s less clear to compare a company scoring 750 points to a company scoring 850 points in a study, than to show these companies’ scores as one company scoring 85% and the other as scoring 75%. If you want another quick way to compare companies without having to compare percentages, you can go to my home page, smartshopyourcarinsurance.com, to see if an auto or homeowners insurance company consistently performs better than average, average, or worse than average for customer service, claims, and pricing, and compare the company to over 40 other U.S. auto & home insurance companies. The companies below are ranked considering their scores in the 2013, 2014, & 2015 JD Power auto insurance customer satisfaction studies. I’ll update this review as the latest JD Power studies are published. In some years, a company may have too small of a survey response from its customers to be rated & included in the study for that year. When this occurs, I use the code “NR” in place of the score.

NR = Not Rated
