Florida Auto Insurance Review: Best & Worst Complaint Records for the 26 Largest Companies in the State.

This review analyzes & ranks the 26 largest auto insurance companies in Florida, from best to worst by their auto insurance complaint history, as determined by complaints filed against them by FL auto insurance customers & claimants with the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, during the years of 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, & 2014. Common reasons for filing complaints with the Florida state insurance department are because of denials, delays, or inadequate payments of claims. I’ll also look at each company’s change in Florida auto insurance market share, as an indication of which companies have higher or lower auto insurance rates.

Florida Auto Insurance Complaints Review

When this review was first written, the largest auto insurance companies in Florida were in part determined from 2009 data at this page of the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation website. Revising for 2015, The insurance companies in this review are the largest insurers of private passenger vehicles in the state of Florida, based on their 2014 annual direct written auto insurance premiums.

The largest auto insurance companies are included in this review, but some of the largest companies are different subsidiaries of the same insurance group. Many insurance organizations, such as GEICO, Allstate, USAA, Progressive, & State Farm, have more than one major subsidiary selling auto insurance in Florida.

Although different auto insurance subsidiaries of the same parent company, such as Progressive American Insurance Company and Progressive Select Insurance Company, have different rates, market shares, discounts, customer complaint records, and sometimes coverage and discounts from each other, it is usually the same claims operation handling claims for all subsidiaries. Because most auto insurance complaints filed against a company with the state are claims-related, I’m combining the complaint records for some of the larger subsidiary companies of a particular auto insurance brand.

Sometimes a parent company will own more than one auto insurance brand of companies, like Liberty Mutual owns Safeco, and Allstate owns Esurance. Since these brands are separate operations with their own claims departments and procedures, they are considered in this review as separate companies.

The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation provides information on the number of auto insurance complaints it receives for each auto insurance company or subsidiary in Florida each year. However, knowing the number of auto insurance complaints each year for a certain company does not help you properly compare its auto insurance complaint record against another company.

Say, for example, you know Company A, which has a 20% share of the Florida auto insurance market, has 100 auto insurance complaints for 2014. You are trying to decide between Company A, and Company B, which has a Florida auto insurance market share of 5%, but only 50 auto insurance complaints for 2014. Although Company B has half the number of auto insurance complaints of Company A, you need to consider Company B has only 1/4 of the number of customers insured with Company A. For Company B to have the better auto insurance complaint record for 2014, it would need to have less than 25% of the number of auto insurance complaints made against Company A.

You can’t properly compare auto insurance companies of much different sizes by just looking at the number of complaints. To illustrate why this is the case in another way, a company with 500,000 auto insurance policyholders and 100 auto insurance complaints has 1 complaint per 5,000 auto insurance policies, but a company with 20,000 auto insurance policyholders and 20 auto insurance complaints, has a much worse record of 1 complaint per 1,000 auto insurance policies.

I calculate the number of auto insurance complaints for each company (or more often, the total complaints for all its subsidiaries among the largest companies) per 1 million dollars of annual direct written auto insurance premiums. A company’s total direct written auto insurance premium is the sum of the premium dollars collected for all auto insurance policies for a company in a given year, which is often used as a measure to calculate an insurance company’s market share in a line of business, like auto or home insurance.

The companies with the best auto insurance complaint records will have the lowest number of complaints per one million dollars of annual direct written auto insurance premium, and the companies with the worst auto insurance complaint records will have the highest number of complaints per million. To make it easier for you to find the best auto insurance companies in Florida and avoid the worst auto insurance companies, I rank them for you.

The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation website is the source of my information about the number of auto insurance complaints and direct written auto insurance premium for each company or subsidiary in this review.

Florida Auto Insurance Companies and their FL Customer Complaint Ranking

The companies below are listed from #1 to #26 in order of Florida auto insurance market share size as of 2014, so the first company in this review is the company with the largest auto insurance market share in Florida, not the company with the best auto insurance complaint record. Likewise, the last company is the company in this review with the smallest auto insurance market share in Florida, not the company with the worst auto insurance complaint record. Look for each company’s “auto insurance complaint record ranking” in bold below each company’s name.

I rank the companies based on the number determined by combining the FL auto insurance complaint ratios over the most recent three years (2012, 2013, & 2014), but weigh the most recent years more heavily, if the 2013 or 2014 FL auto insurance complaint ratios are much better or worse than 2012. The companies with the lowest auto insurance complaint ratios have the best complaint records, and are ranked from the best (#1) to the worst (#26).

Although the companies are ranked from best to worst, sometimes there is little difference in their most recent three year FL auto insurance complaint record. You can see the data and decide for yourself, but to make it easier for you, I also group the companies into tier groups, where the companies within a tier have similar complaint records. Tiers 1 through 11 are from best to worst. Tiers 6-11 all have very poor complaint records.
