This review will show you the twenty-five biggest auto insurance companies in California, covering over 80% of the CA auto insurance market, ranking them from best to worst based on their California auto insurance complaint records over the last three years (2011, 2012, & 2013). I’ll show you the auto insurance companies with the best & worst complaint records. Reading this review of the major California auto insurance companies can help you find the companies saving you the most money, as well as help you avoid the companies with consistently poor auto insurance complaint records each year.

This review is divided into two sections: The auto insurance complaint rankings for the companies consisting the twenty-five largest car insurance brands in California, and then complaint information on other companies (better-known brands) outside the top 25 largest companies, to see how with they compare with the top 25 companies’ best and worst complaint records.

Section I

25 Top CA Auto Insurance Companies Ranked from Best to Worst for Complaints

These 25 largest California auto insurance companies are determined by the number of exposures (personal vehicles, including motorcycles & motorhomes) they insured in California for 2013, as reported here by the California Department of Insurance website. That web page is also my source for California auto insurance complaints against each company for 2011, 2012, & 2013.

The justified complaint ratio used to rank the 25 largest auto insurance companies in CA is the number of complaints per 100,000 exposures for each company. The California Department of Insurance defines its justified complaint ratio here.

The California auto insurance market is fragmented, like it is in most states, with no company having a majority of the market, and where major national companies like Metlife and The Hartford have only around one percent of the market, so even smaller sized companies are large enough to make my list of the top 25 largest auto insurance companies in California.

I list the companies from #1 to #25 by number of California exposures, so the first company listed at #1 is the largest, not the best auto insurance complaint record. Look for each company’s “complaint record ranking” in bold below each company’s name.

Attention: Insurance companies may have several subsidiary companies selling auto insurance in California. Some auto insurance companies will quote you a different subsidiary based on your driving record, whether you request the quote direct or from an agent, or other reasons. For example, Progressive West Insurance Company is a different Progressive subsidiary than Progressive Select Insurance Company, but they both are large insurers of cars in California. Make sure you know the correct name of the insurance subsidiary company quoting or insuring you, to check the proper complaint ratio. I consider subsidiaries operating under a single brand as one company. For example, Liberty Mutual owns Safeco, Allstate owns Esurance & Encompass, Farmers owns Bristol West & 21st Century, and Nationwide owns Allied, but each of these brands, in spite of common ownership, operate as separate entities, so I consider them separate companies. I only include the top 25 brands from the 50 largest subsidiaries documented on the California Department of Insurance website with their justified complaint ratios, so if the subsidiary you are insured with does not appear in this review, you can contact me to research the company’s California complaint information for you.

I base each company’s complaint ranking usually on its largest subsidiary, unless a substantial portion of a parent company’s total auto insurance customers are with subsidiaries with a much different complaint ratio.

The importance of California auto insurance market share

I show you the auto insurance companies insuring the most vehicles in California, because they may be the most likely to have the most competitive rates. No single company has low rates for every type of driver, so you can’t depend on word of mouth to help you find a good rate for you. People need to shop to find the company saving them the most money for the coverage they need. Although, most people are aware of large companies like Allstate & State Farm selling auto insurance in CA, they might not be aware of companies like Allied or Wawanesa, insuring good drivers, and Infinity Insurance Company, insuring most drivers, which are both included in the top 25 largest insurers of vehicles in California.

The California auto insurance market is fragmented, like most states, with no company having a majority of the market, and where major national companies like Metlife and The Hartford have only around one percent of the market, so even smaller sized companies are large enough to make my list of the top 25 largest auto insurance companies in California, but some better known names may not be included. Mercury, Allied, USAA, and Wawanesa have the best California auto insurance complaint records from 2011 to 2013. Foremost also has a very good CA auto insurance complaint record, but if Foremost focuses on the same market in California as it does in other states, it may be a good choice only for higher risk drivers not meeting California State’s definition of a “good driver.” In addition to the auto insurance companies listed in Section II with poor complaint records, Access, Metlife, Liberty Mutual, 21st Century, and Loya Insurance have some of the worst California auto insurance complaint records from 2011 to 2013.

A company’s complaint record is important, but so is the company’s coverage options and price. Some companies charge a lot more than other companies for the same coverage. a big mistake people make when shopping for auto insurance is they don’t check the rates of enough companies. If you haven’t shopped your auto or home insurance in the last few years with at least five other companies, there is a good chance you are paying too much.
