Mutual of Enumclaw Review: Auto, Home, Mobile home, Landlords, Boat, Condo, Renters Insurance

Mutual of Enumclaw is a regional insurance company headquartered in Enumclaw, WA., selling auto, home, & other types of property & casualty insurance in the states of Arizona, Idaho, Oregon, Utah & Washington through independent insurance agencies located in communities throughout these states. Mutual of Enumclaw has been included in the annual JD Power US auto insurance customer satisfaction study for the Northwest region in 2013 & 2014, but many people living in the states where its available — particularly in Utah and Arizona, where it has more recently become available — may be unaware of Mutual of Enumclaw as an option for their car or home insurance.

This review analyzes the JD Power customer satisfaction ratings, AM Best financial strength ratings, and the most recent three-year home & auto insurance customer complaint records for the Mutual of Enumclaw companies, and compares them with major competitors like Allstate, State Farm, GEICO, Nationwide, Safeco, American Family, & Farmers. If you don’t want to read the entire review, you can skip to my review summary at the end (Section #6), to find out if my analysis concludes the auto & home insurance customer service & claims handling by Mutual of Enumclaw is below average, average, or above average. Reading this review will help you decide if Mutual of Enumclaw is a good choice to insure your car, home, or provide for your other insurance needs.

Mutual of Enumclaw Insurance Review

Mutual of Enumclaw was founded in 1898. Until the late 1940s, Mutual of Enumclaw focused on serving farms throughout Washington state, when it began to offer a wider array of insurance for families throughout Washington. Mutual of Enumclaw expanded into Idaho and Oregon in 1952, Utah in 2002, and Arizona in April of 2014. Mutual of Enumclaw is a mutual insurance company, which means the company is owned by its policyholders, instead of being owned by stockholders. Many auto & home insurance companies are organized as mutual companies. Although there is no need for a mutual company to maximize profit to please stockholders, it should not be assumed mutual companies have lower rates than other types of insurance companies.

The Mutual of Enumclaw website and requesting insurance price quotes

Unlike the websites of many insurance companies, you can not request an auto insurance price quote (or price quote for any other type of insurance) for Mutual of Enumclaw through the company website. Instead, the Mutual of Enumclaw website can find for you the contact information for local independent insurance agencies representing Mutual of Enumclaw near you. This is not unusual for some insurance companies using independent insurance agents to allow their agency partners to exclusively quote and sell their insurance products. Simply find local agents by you, and contact them for price quotes.

However, for a small insurance company, Mutual of Enumclaw has many online features for customers through its website, such as access to policy & billing information online, making payments, and the availability of a mobile application for proof of auto insurance, auto insurance claims filing & services, and for providing company feedback on performance.

Types of insurance offered by Mutual of Enumclaw Insurance

Mutual of Enumclaw sells auto, homeowners, condominium, renters, mobile home, farm, business, landlord, boat, and excess liability insurance policies, but like all insurance companies, only to customers qualifying under its risk selection criteria. Because Mutual of Enumclaw sells its insurance coverage through independent insurance agencies often representing many companies, you usually don’t have to worry about the agency being able to find a company it represents to help you, if you don’t qualify for Mutual of Enumclaw, or if another reputable company has a better price for the same or better coverage. Some independent insurance agencies focus more on commercial insurance for businesses, than insuring all types of auto & home insurance customers, but at least they should be able to refer you to another agent more likely able & willing to help you.

The rest of this Mutual of Enumclaw Insurance review is divided into six parts, consisting of: 1. The AM Best Financial Strength ratings for the Mutual of Enumclaw insurance companies, 2. Any recent JD Power ratings for Mutual of Enumclaw, 3. the auto insurance customer complaint ratings for the Mutual Enumclaw Insurance companies over the last three years, 4. the home insurance customer complaint ratings for the Mutual of Enumclaw Insurance companies over the last three years, 5. Mutual of Enumclaw complaints & ratings compared to major competitors, and 6. a Mutual of Enumclaw review summary, rating the company average, better than average, or below average, based on its annual auto & home insurance complaint records & ratings over the last few years.

1. AM Best Financial Strength Rating for the Mutual of Enumclaw Insurance Companies

Mutual of Enumclaw currently consists of two subsidiary companies: Mutual of Enumclaw Insurance Company and Enumclaw Property & Casualty Insurance Company. The parent company also owns Nevada General Insurance Company, a specialty auto insurer operating in Arizona, California, Nevada, and New Mexico. I include the AM Best rating for Nevada General here, but since it operates as a separate brand than the Enumclaw companies, it is not considered in the rest of this review. Nevada General sells motorcycle insurance and auto insurance to higher risk drivers, so if you have a cycle, or have problems qualifying for standard auto insurance, and you live in Arizona, California, Nevada, or New Mexico, you can request price quotes or find a local agent representing Nevada General at the Nevada General Insurance Company website.

Mutual of Enumclaw Insurance Company & Enumclaw Property & Casualty Insurance Company had their “A-” (Excellent) AM Best Financial Strength Rating with a stable outlook (no possible ratings upgrade or downgrade is expected in the near future) reaffirmed on 12/18/2014. The AM Best rating of “A-“ is the fourth highest rating for AM Best.

Nevada General Insurance Company had its AM Best Financial Strength Rating downgraded to “A-” (Excellent) with a negative outlook (a possible ratings downgrade is possible in the near future)on 12/12/2013. Nevada General Insurance Company was downgraded once again to “B++” (Good) on 12/18/14, but with a stable financial outlook, meaning no ratings upgrade or downgrade is anticipated in the near future. On 12/16/15, Nevada General Insurance Company had its B++ AM Best Financial Strength Rating affirmed, still with a stable financial outlook. However, its issuer credit rating was downgraded by AM Best, due to its inconsistent & below average operating performance.*

The AM Best financial strength ratings are not a measure of customer service or the quality of the company’s claims adjusting, but an opinion about its ability to pay claims, remain financially solvent, and stay in business. I recommend avoiding, if possible or practical, any auto, property insurance company with lower than an “A-” rating for financial strength from AM Best, such as Nevada General Insurance Company, owned by Mutual of Enumclaw. Many major auto & home insurance companies have higher financial strength ratings than the Mutual of Enumclaw companies, but the difference in financial strength among A++, A+, A, & A- rated companies is not significant to me unless higher rated companies are the same or better in terms of price, coverage, claims handling, and customer service.

2. JD Power US Auto Insurance Customer Satisfaction Study Ratings for Mutual of Enumclaw

The annual JD Power Auto Insurance Customer Satisfaction Study now consists of many regional or single state studies. Mutual of Enumclaw is usually included in just one regional study, the Northwest study, including the opinions of Idaho, Oregon, & Washington Mutual of Enumclaw customers.

Although Mutual of Enumclaw has been selling auto & home insurance in Utah since 2002, its market share was not large enough in the Southwest states as a whole to be included in the Southwest region study. Mutual of Enumclaw started selling insurance in Arizona only as of this year. I think Arizona & Utah auto & home insurance customers can use Mutual of Enumclaw’s results in the Northwest study as an indication of the quality of service for the company in their states.

I’ll compare the JD Power Northwest regional study scores and ratings in 2013 & 2014 for Mutual of Enumclaw — the only two years where there has been a Northwest regional study, and the only JD Power studies where Mutual of Enumclaw has been included — with other major auto insurance companies, such as Allstate, State Farm, Progressive, Safeco, American Family, Farmers, etc.

2015 Northwest Study

The sample share of Mutual of Enumclaw auto insurance customers surveyed was too small this year, so Mutual of Enumclaw was not scored or rated in the 2015 JD Power Auto Insurance Customer Satisfaction Study.

2014 Northwest Study

Mutual of Enumclaw was the 5th highest scoring company in this regional study, with USAA (available only to US Military & honorably discharged veterans and their immediate families) scoring much higher, by 78 points (7.8%), PEMCO (available in Oregon & Washington only) scoring higher by 26 points (2.6%), and scoring about the same as The Hartford (6 points higher than Mutual of Enumclaw) and State Farm (1 point higher than Mutual of Enumclaw).

Mutual of Enumclaw received the rating of four power circles (better than most) for overall auto insurance customer satisfaction, scoring 828 points out of 1,000 points, which is 16 points higher (1.6%) than the Northwest regional average score of 812 points on the 1,000 point scale. Mutual of Enumclaw scored 10 points (1%) higher than American Family (which still scored 6 points higher than the NW regional study average) and much higher than than these companies, scoring below the NW regional study average: Safeco, GEICO, Nationwide, Farmers, Progressive, Allstate, & Liberty Mutual. Mutual of Enumclaw improved over its 2013 score, by 15 points (1.5%), but customer satisfaction scores for all auto insurance companies were up quite a bit from 2013.

Mutual of Enumclaw received the highest rating of five power circles in the Claims category (the only other company in this regional study also receiving the highest rating in the Claims category was USAA), but rated about average (3 power circles) in the category of Company Interaction. For the Pricing category, Mutual of Enumclaw rated four power circles (better than most). Other Companies rated at four power circles or better for the Pricing category in this region were: Pemco, GEICO, The Hartford, and USAA.

2013 Northwest Study

Mutual of Enumclaw was the fourth highest scoring company in the 2013 NW region study. As usual, USAA score much higher than all other companies in the region, and 72 points (7.2%) higher than Mutual of Enumclaw. As in the 2014 study, PEMCO (available in Oregon & Washington only) scored higher (21 points (2.1%) higher than Mutual of Enumclaw) and The Hartford scored only somewhat better (7 point higher than Mutual of Enumclaw) than Mutual of Enumclaw. State Farm scored 8 points lower than Mutual of Enumclaw, but still higher than the regional study average. American Family scored only slighty above the study average, and 18 points (1.8%) below Mutual of Enumclaw.

Mutual of Enumclaw received the rating of four power circles (better than most) for overall auto insurance customer satisfaction, scoring 813 points out of 1,000 points, which is 21 points higher (2.1%) than the Northwest regional average score of 792 points on the 1,000 point scale. Mutual of Enumclaw scored much higher than than these companies, scoring below the 2013 NW regional study average: Progressive, Liberty Mutual, Allstate, GEICO, Nationwide, Safeco & Farmers.

Summary: Mutual of Enumclaw has provided higher than average overall auto insurance customer satisfaction in 2013 & 2014. USAA has provided much higher satisfaction than Mutual of Enumclaw during this period. PEMCO & The Hartford have both scored higher than Mutual of Enumclaw during this period, but Mutual of Enumclaw was the only one of these three companies to receive a five power circle rating for the Claims category in 2014. If claims handling is important to you, it would be wise to consider Mutual of Enumclaw before choosing PEMCO or Hartford. State Farm and American Family score lower, but may be acceptable alternatives to Mutual of Enumclaw if they have much better price or coverage for you.

Mutual of Enumclaw Insurance Complaint Statistics & Ratings

I analyze the most recent three-year complaint records for the Mutual of Enumclaw companies in the next two sections for auto insurance complaints and for home (homeowners, condo, renters) insurance complaints. I also look at the growth or reduction in annual premium for each product line, as a possible indication of low or high auto or home insurance pricing.

The most common reasons for policyholders to file auto & home insurance complaints with a state insurance department against insurance companies, are for claim-related issues, such as delays in a claim payment, unsatisfactory payment of a claim, or denial of a claim. The complaint statistics used in this Mutual of Enumclaw Insurance review are the number of upheld complaints filed against each of the Mutual of Enumclaw companies with a state’s insurance regulatory authority (most often in the states of Arizona, Idaho, Oregon, Utah, & Washington, where Mutual of Enumclaw sells coverage), adjusted for its home or auto insurance market share, as determined by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. This Mutual of Enumclaw Insurance review provides valuable complaint information to help you decide if Mutual of Enumclaw is the right insurance company for you. By choosing an insurance company with a better-than-average complaint history, or at least avoiding companies with consistent, worse-than-average complaint records, you decrease the likelihood you will have a poor experience, when you need your auto or home insurance company the most.

Considering the total auto insurance premium for both subsidiaries, auto insurance market share has increased each year since 2012. 5. Mutual of Enumclaw companies’ Complaint Record compared to the Complaint Records of Allstate, State Farm, GEICO, & Progressive Insurance.

For both personal auto insurance & home (including homeowners, mobile home, condo, & renters) insurance, Both Mutual of Enumclaw subsidiaries had superior three year auto & home insurance complaint histories, compared to Allstate, GEICO, Progressive and State Farm.

6. Mutual of Enumclaw Insurance Review Summary

Here’s my summary to give you the bottom line on the customer satisfaction & rates for Mutual of Enumclaw auto & home insurance, to see if the company performs better than average, average, or worse than average. For auto insurance, my evaluation is based on JD Power study results, as well as auto insurance complaint statistics for Mutual of Enumclaw over the last three years. For home insurance, Mutual of Enumclaw is not rated by JD Power, so customer service & claims handling is evaluated based on its three year home insurance complaint record. Although the home insurance complaint record can be particularly useful for identifying companies with poor claims service, it’s not helpful for evaluating customer satisfaction or home insurance rates. With companies like Mutual of Enumclaw, having their policies sold and serviced through independent insurance agents, the quality of customer satisfaction & service depends mostly on the agent you choose. As for pricing, the most reliable way to know if a company is over-priced is to conduct your own pricing survey, by requesting price quotes from all the leading insurance companies in your state, to find the best company for you.

Mutual of Enumclaw Auto & Home Insurance Rates

Current Mutual of Enumclaw auto insurance customers in Idaho, Oregon, & Washington rated the pricing of Mutual of Enumclaw auto insurance at four power circles (better than most) as surveyed by JD Power in 2014. Since JD Power does not include Mutual of Enumclaw in any of its home insurance studies, there is no rating for the price of its home insurance coverage. As regular readers of my blog know, I don’t recommend using the opinions of others about a company’s rates instead of checking the company’s rates for yourself. No single auto or home insurance company has competitive rates for everyone, with some companies charging a lot more than others for the same coverage. Your auto & home insurance rates are unique to your situation. All companies seem to save some people money, but have lousy rates for other people. This is why many insurance companies can advertise about the big savings some people find with them.
