The Top Twenty Largest Home Insurance Companies in Louisiana, Ranked from Best to Worst by their 2012, 2011, & 2010 Complaint Ratings (listed in order of size).

These largest Louisiana home insurance companies are determined by the amount of premium they collect in Louisiana for home insurance each year. The Louisiana Department of Insurance is my source of LA home insurance market share & written premium for these companies. I use the national 2012, 2011, 2010 complaint ratios for each auto insurance company in this review, from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners website, to assign my complaint ratings.

The home insurance complaint ratios compare the company’s U.S. market share of closed complaints to the company’s U.S. market share of premiums for home insurance. Complaint ratios lower than “1″ have less complaints than average, and complaint ratios over “1″ have more complaints than average.

The complaint ratios are numerical scores, & may not be easy to understand at a glance. I devised a rating system, giving grades to companies based on the complaint ratios, to make it easier to compare companies, find the best home insurance companies, and avoid the insurance companies with a consistently worse-than-average complaint record.

You can find out more information and get home insurance price quotes from many of the companies listed below (and others) by clicking the ads on this page & my Website. For some of the smaller companies less likely to advertise, I list the company Website, so you can visit it and locate an agent, if you want a price quote from the company.

1. State Farm Insurance

Complaint Record Ranking (Best to Worst): #4

State Farm has one subsidiary company, insuring a large number of homes in Louisiana:

State Farm Fire & Casualty Company Home Insurance Complaint Statistics & Ratings

B = Better than Average C = Average W = Worse than Average

2012 Home Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (.45)

2011 Home Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (.52)

2010 Home Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (.41)

Customer Satisfaction: For the JD Power 2012 US Home Insurance Customer Satisfaction Study, State Farm received the rating of 4 power circles (better than most), and scored 805 points on the 1,000 point scale, which is 20 points (2%) higher than the study average for all companies, at 785 out of 1,000 points. In 2011, State Farm scored 788 out of 1,000 points (the 2011 study average for all companies surveyed was 769 points), also earning the rating of four power circles (better than most). These scores are better than average, but State Farm did not greatly outperform the average company. The top scoring companies in the 2012 study scored much better. Amica scored 859 on the 1,000 point scale, which is 54 points higher than State Farm. USAA scored 910 out of 1,000 points, which is a whopping 105 points better (10.5%) than State Farm.

Claims Satisfaction: For the 2013 JD Power US Property Claims Satisfaction Study, State Farm scored 832 out of 1,000 points, exactly the same number of points as the study average, and a rating of 3 power circles (about average). For the 2012 JD Power US Property Claims Satisfaction Study, State Farm scored 846 out of 1,000 points (the 2012 study average was 833 points), awarding it the rating of 4 power circles (better than most). Although State Farm had a lower rating, and scored 14 points lower in 2013 than it did in 2012, the point difference is small, considering the 1,000 point scale. In spite of the 4 power circle rating in 2012, I think the scores for 2013 & 2012 for this study show about average home insurance claims satisfaction with State Farm.

2. Allstate Insurance

USAA Insurance Home Insurance Complaint Statistics & Ratings

B = Better than Average C = Average W = Worse than Average

2012 Home Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (.20)

2011 Home Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (.46)

2010 Home Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (.28)

Customer Satisfaction: For the JD Power 2012 US Home Insurance Customer Satisfaction Study, USAA received the best rating of five power circles (among the best), and scored 910 points on the 1,000 point scale, which is a huge 125 points (12.5%) higher than the study average for all companies, at 785 out of 1,000 points. In 2011, USAA scored 883 out of 1,000 points (the 2011 study average for all companies surveyed was 769 points), also earning the highest rating of five power circles (among the best). USAA consistently, year after year, outscores other highly rated insurance companies, often by a wide margin, for home insurance customer satisfaction.

Claims Satisfaction: For the 2013 JD Power US Property Claims Satisfaction Study, USAA scored 904 out of 1,000 points, the highest scoring company in the survey, with a rating of five power circles (among the best). For the 2012 JD Power US Property Claims Satisfaction Study, USAA scored 895 out of 1,000 points (the 2012 study average was 833 points), awarding it the best rating of five power circles (among the best). At least as determined from the JD Power studies, USAA provides superior home insurance claims & customer service satisfaction.

8. Liberty Mutual Insurance

Complaint Record Ranking (Best to Worst): #5

Liberty Mutual has one home insurance subsidiary big enough in Louisiana to be included in this review:

Liberty Mutual Fire Insurance Home Insurance Complaint Statistics & Ratings

B = Better than Average C = Average W = Worse than Average

2012 Home Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (.49)

2011 Home Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (.61)

2010 Home Insurance Complaint Ratio = B (.52)

Customer Satisfaction: For the JD Power 2012 US Home Insurance Customer Satisfaction Study, Liberty Mutual received the lowest rating of two power circles (the rest), and scored 763 points on the 1,000 point scale, which is 22 points (2.2%) below the study average score for all companies, at 785 out of 1,000 points. In 2011, Liberty Mutual scored 750 out of 1,000 points (the 2011 study average for all companies surveyed was 769 points), earning the rating of three power circles (about average). Although Liberty Mutual received a 3 power circle rating (about average) in 2011, its actual score was below average — but not greatly below average. Liberty Mutual actually improved its score in 2012 by 13 points, but received the lowest power circle rating due to a higher survey average score for all companies. Based on the numerical scores, I’d consider Liberty Mutual slightly below average for customer satisfaction.

Claims Satisfaction: For the 2013 JD Power US Property Claims Satisfaction Study, Liberty Mutual scored 839 out of 1,000 points, 7 points above the study average of 832 out of 1,000 points, and a rating of three power circles (about average). For the 2012 JD Power US Property Claims Satisfaction Study, Liberty Mutual scored 824 out of 1,000 points (the 2012 study average was 833 points), earning it the rating of three power circles (about average).

2012 Home Insurance Complaint Ratio = C (.82)

2011 Home Insurance Complaint Ratio = C (.78)

2010 Home Insurance Complaint Ratio = W (1.30)

Customer Satisfaction: For the JD Power 2012 US Home Insurance Customer Satisfaction Study, Farmers received the lowest rating of two power circles (the rest), and scored 760 points on the 1,000 point scale, which is 25 points (2.5%) lower than the study average for all companies, at 785 out of 1,000 points. In 2011, Farmers scored 755 out of 1,000 points (the 2011 study average for all companies surveyed was 769 points), with the rating of three power circles (about average). Like Liberty Mutual, Farmers slightly increased its score in 2012, but still received a lower rating than 2011, due to a higher study average for all companies. Based on the scores, I’d consider Farmers somewhat below average for home insurance customer satisfaction.

Claims Satisfaction: For the 2013 JD Power US Property Claims Satisfaction Study, Farmers scored 825 out of 1,000 points, 7 points below the study average score of 832 out of 1,000 points, with a rating of 3 power circles (about average). For the 2012 JD Power US Property Claims Satisfaction Study, Farmers scored 818 out of 1,000 points (the 2012 study average was 833 points), and rated at three power circles (about average). Although the ratings for 2012 & 2013 were about average, the numerical scores for both years are below average. 12. Safeco Insurance Company of America

Complaint Record Ranking (Best to Worst): #13

You can find a local independent insurance agent representing this Safeco subsidiary at the Safeco Website. Safeco’s parent company is Liberty Mutual, but Safeco operates as a separate operation and brand.

Safeco Insurance Company of America Home Insurance Complaint Statistics & Ratings

B = Better than Average C = Average W = Worse than Average

2012 Home Insurance Complaint Ratio = C (.99)

2011 Home Insurance Complaint Ratio = C (.81)

2010 Home Insurance Complaint Ratio = C (.84)

Customer Satisfaction: For the JD Power 2012 US Home Insurance Customer Satisfaction Study, Safeco received the rating of three power circles (about average), and scored 786 points on the 1,000 point scale, which is only 1 point (.01%) higher than the study average for all companies, at 785 out of 1,000 points. In 2011, Safeco scored 747 out of 1,000 points (the 2011 study average for all companies surveyed was 769 points), earning the worst rating of two power circles (the rest). Although being 22 points below average in 2011 is a concern, I weigh the most recent year more heavily, so I would cautiously say home insurance customer satisfaction is about average.

Claims Satisfaction: For the 2013 JD Power US Property Claims Satisfaction Study, Safeco scored 817 out of 1,000 points, 15 points below the study average of 832 out of 1,000 points, with a rating of 3 power circles (about average). For the 2012 JD Power US Property Claims Satisfaction Study, Safeco scored 835 out of 1,000 points (the 2012 study average was 833 points), with the rating of three power circles (about average). Although Safeco was rated 3 power circles (about average) for 2013 & 2012, the 2013 score was 1.5% below average, so I would consider Safeco Home insurance claims satisfaction as slightly below average.

In 2011, Shelter was not included in the study, but in 2010 it was rated at four power circles (better than most). The 2012 score is better than average, and slightly better than State Farm, but did not strongly outperform the average company. The top scoring companies in the 2012 study scored much better. Amica scored 859 on the 1,000 point scale, which is 49 points higher than Shelter. USAA scored 910 out of 1,000 points, which is a 100 points better (10%) than Shelter.
