JD Power 2012 Auto Insurance Southeast Region Study: Summary & Conclusions

Today, I’m writing about the JD Power 2012 auto insurance customer satisfaction study for the Southeast region of the USA, including the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, & Tennessee. More so than the other regional studies I have reviewed, I think the power circle ratings in the Southeast regional study are very misleading, with some top rated, 5 power circle (among the best) rated companies, scoring only a few points above the average score, and not many points above companies rated at 3 power circles (about average) for overall customer satisfaction. I’ll analyze the scores and ratings, and let you know my opinion why a company may be a good choice for you, and if I think the study results indicate truly better or worse customer satisfaction. To find the best rates and customer service, I recommend getting quotes from all the companies on the list, starting with the highest rated companies. Not all of these companies may sell auto insurance in the state you live in. You may not qualify for every company due to being recently licensed, not currently insured, having a poor driving record, or other factors. I designate companies insuring most drivers, or offering nonstandard auto insurance, with an (*), to show you the companies most likely to help you, if you have difficulty qualifying for auto insurance.

JD Power 2012 Southeast Region Auto Insurance Study: 20 Companies ranked from Best to Worst for Overall Satisfaction

1,000 points is a perfect score.

1. USAA auto insurance — 930 points. USAA has the highest customer satisfaction above all other companies, in every one of the seven JD Power regional studies measuring auto insurance customer satisfaction. Satisfaction with USAA is among the highest in the Southeast region. USAA scored 102 points more, on the 1000 point scale, than the next highest scoring company in this study. The score for USAA is more than 10% higher than the second highest scoring company. USAA was rated among the best for Pricing in the survey, but no single company has the best price for everyone. If USAA does not have the lowest price for you, I would still consider choosing it, based on its stellar results in this survey, and excellent performance in past surveys. Unfortunately, you need to be in the military, an immediate family member of someone in the military, or an honorably discharged veteran to be eligible for USAA.

The next three companies received 5 power circle ratings (among the best) for overall customer satisfaction in the study, but they only scored 14 points, 9 points, and 7 points respectively, above the regional study average score (814 points on a 1,000 point scale), which equals a 3 power circle rating.

Unless these companies are among the companies with the best rates for you, I would not consider them better than any of the average companies rated at 3 power circles.

2. Tennessee Farm Bureau auto insurance — 828 points. This company was rated above average in all categories, except Contacting the Insurance Company, where it was rated average.

3. North Carolina Farm Bureau auto insurance — 823 points. This company was rated above average for coverage offered & contacting the insurance company, but only average for Pricing and its Billing & Payment system.

4. State Farm auto insurance — 821 points. The worst performing factor for State Farm was for the category of Pricing, where it was rated below average. However, this does not mean State Farm will not have the lowest price for you. Get a quote and find out what State Farm can do for you.

*5. Geico auto insurance — 815 points. Geico scored 1 point on the 1,000 point scale above the regional average. The overall customer satisfaction for Geico was rated as average, but was considered above average by its customers surveyed for Billing & Payment, Policy Offerings, & Pricing. It rated average for Contacting the Insurance Company.

The Southeast region average score for all auto insurance customers responding to the survey: 814 out of 1,000 points. This is slightly greater than the national study average of 804 points.

6. Kentucky Farm Bureau auto insurance — 814 points. This company scored the same as the regional study average score. Kentucky Farm bureau rated above average for Pricing, but below average for its Billing & Payment system.

*7. Allstate auto insurance — 806 points. This company scored 9 points below the region average score, but it rated average for all factors except Pricing, which was rated below average. If Allstate has a good price for you, the rating for the category of Pricing — the opinion of other Allstate customers about the price they pay for coverage — should not matter to you.

8. Auto Owners auto insurance — 802 points. Auto Owners scored 12 points below the SE region average score. Although Auto Owners did not out-perform in this study, it received 5 power circles (among the best), and was the award winner, for the JD Power 2011 Auto Claims Satisfaction Study. Auto Owners customers rated Policy Offerings and Billing & Payment as below average, but given the overall score, it is not much below average. Considering handling claims is the mot important thing a car insurance company does for you, you should see what Auto Owners can do for you.

*9. Nationwide auto insurance — 797 points. Nationwide was rated at the lowest JD Power rating, 2 power circles (the rest), for overall satisfaction, but it rated average for all factors except Pricing, which was rated below average. Since Nationwide scored only 17 points on a 1,000 point scale below the regional average, it is not much below average. Nationwide customers show the most dissatisfaction with Pricing, so if you are insured with Nationwide, you may be able to save a lot of money by choosing another company. However, whether you are insured with Nationwide or not, you may find Nationwide has the best rate for you. The only way to make an intelligent decision about pricing is to get a quote and compare it with quotes offered by other leading companies.

The next two companies, like Nationwide, are rated with the lowest 2 power circle rating by JD Power in this study, but their point scores are are only 1 and 2 points below Nationwide respectively, and I think all three of these companies are close enough to the study average to be considered having average customer satisfaction.

*10. Progressive auto insurance — 796 points. Progressive was rated average in all factors, except Contacting the Insurance Company, which was rated below average. This can be a problem if you don’t have a personal agent to assist you when you have trouble getting a response from your insurance company.

11. Metlife auto insurance — 795 points. Metlife rated below average for Policy Offerings & Contacting the Insurance Company. If you choose Metlife, try to buy from a good agent whom returns calls promptly, instead of buying direct from the company, and make sure the coverage available best fits your needs.

You should get quotes from all the above companies, if you want to figure out which company has the best mix of price and service. The rest of the companies on this list did not score so poorly to say they have low customer satisfaction, but their scores are enough below the study average, to say they should only be a good choice if they have the best price for you, or will insure you when higher scoring companies will not insure you, or if they have a unique coverage option important to you.

*12. Alfa Insurance — 794 points.

13. Liberty Mutual auto insurance — 794 points.

14. Hartford auto insurance — 794 points. Hartford customers surveyed were most satisfied with Pricing.

15. Travelers auto insurance — 790 points. Travelers auto insurance policy holders surveyed were most satisfied with Pricing.

*16. Farmers auto insurance — 789 points.

*17. GMAC auto insurance — 785 points. GMAC customers in this study were most satisfied in the category of Pricing.

*18. 21st Century auto insurance — 774 points. 21st century car insurance customers surveyed were most satisfied with Pricing.

*19. Safeco auto insurance — 763 points. Safeco rated below average in all categories.

*20. Direct General auto insurance — 744 points. Direct General sells nonstandard auto insurance to drivers having a hard time qualifying for standard auto insurance, due to their driving history, or other reasons. Unless you don’t qualify for many of the companies scoring higher in the study, you don’t need to get a quote from a nonstandard auto insurance company like Direct General. However, if many companies are turning you down for coverage, see what Direct General can do for you.
