JD Power 2012 Auto Insurance US Central Region Study: Summary & Conclusions

Here is my summary and conclusions analyzing the results for the JD Power central region auto insurance customer satisfaction study, covering the states of Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Texas.

The JD Power overall customer satisfaction power circle rating can be misleading, with 5 or 4 power circle rated companies not scoring significantly better than the average 3 power circle rated company. Also, some companies receiving the lowest rating, 2 power circles, did not score much lower than average.

My analysis will help you know the companies that really did outperform in the survey. But more importantly, let you know the highly rated companies not scoring much above average to be worth paying more, and the lower rated companies, with close to average customer satisfaction, which may be fine for you if they have a great price for you.

With my reviews of the California & West region JD Power auto insurance surveys, I wrote blog posts analyzing the number scores, overall satisfaction ratings, and category ratings, such as Policy Offerings, for each company. I think it might be more helpful, and easier for readers, if I stick to only a summary of each regional study results, discussing how the company scores relate to each other, pointing out the companies truly standing out for high customer satisfaction, and noting the companies where customer satisfaction is really marginal.

Once I have completed my summaries of the seven regional auto insurance customer satisfaction studies, I will re-write my insurance company reviews to analyze the 2012 JD Power auto insurance customer satisfaction study ratings for all the factors considered and rated in the study, like Contacting the Insurance Company, for each company.

I list the companies included in this study, from best to worst, by the numerical score the company received for overall customer satisfaction by JD Power. The number scores are better than the power circle ratings for seeing how well each company performed in the study, and how far each company’s score is from the study average for the central region

You may not qualify for every auto insurance company on this list, due to reasons such as your driving record, insurance history, years of driving experience, claims history, or other considerations. I mark the companies with an (*) most likely to be able to insure most drivers, which you should consider, if you have a problem being eligible for auto insurance with some companies,

JD Power 2012 Central Region Auto Insurance Study: 15 Companies ranked from Best to Worst for Overall Satisfaction

1,000 points is a perfect score.

1. USAA auto insurance – 896 points. In all of the regional studies, USAA is the highest scoring company, and usually out-scores the next highest company by a wide margin. I wouldn’t choose a company solely based on JD Power survey results, but the consistently high customer satisfaction scores achieved by USAA makes me consider it one of the few companies worth paying more for, if it can offer you coverage to meet your needs.

In this regional study, USAA scored 896 out of 1,000 possible points, or on a percentage basis, 89.6%. Unfortunately, USAA auto insurance is available only to military members, their family members, and honorably discharged veterans. Like any insurance company, USAA will have great rates for some people in some states. If you can qualify, you definitely want to see what USAA can do for you.

2. Texas Farm Bureau auto insurance – 857 points. Although Texas Farm Bureau is 39 points below USAA, it’s not unusual for the second highest rated company behind USAA to be 60, 70 or 80 points below it. Percentage-wise, USAA is 89.6% compared to 85.7% for Texas Farm Bureau. Like USAA, I think Texas Farm Bureau scores high enough above its competitors to be worth paying more, if other companies have a lower price. Unfortunately, Texas Farm Bureau may be available in few states other than Texas.

3. State Farm Auto Insurance – 832 points. State Farm scored above average in most factors, such as Billing & Payment, but I think it’s score was dragged down by an average rating for Pricing. There is no way for a survey to tell you if a company has a high rate or low rate for you. Considering this study included auto insurance environments as different as Texas, Minnesota, and the Dakotas, it is even more difficult to know if the study rating for Pricing is relevant to you. The only way to find out is to get a price quote. If the price is competitive, I would pay a little more for State Farm, than another company scoring lower in the survey, as long as the coverage is comparable.

*4. Geico auto insurance – 830 points. Only 2 points behind State Farm, Geico was above average in all categories, except Contacting the Insurance Company, where it was rated average. In most areas of the country, Geico does not have local agents. If you need personal service when you have a claim or a problem, Geico may not be the best company for you. For most people, the deciding factor is price. Geico is rated above average for overall customer satisfaction, but it is only 19 points higher on a 1,000 point scale than the study average. I think Geico is a good choice if they have a competitive rate for you, and you don’t mind dealing directly with the insurance company.

*5. American Family auto insurance– 816 points. At 816 points out of 1,000 points, American Family scores 5 points above the regional study average, making it an average performer. But it’s only 16 points below State Farm. American Family may be a good choice for you, if it has a competitive rate for you, State Farm does not have a good rate for you, and you prefer having a local agent.

6. Shelter auto insurance – 814 points. Just 3 points above the regional average score of 811 out of 1,000 points, Shelter rated average in all categories. Once again, the price Shelter quotes you for the coverage you need, compared to the above companies, should be the deciding factor, to see if Shelter is right for you.

The central region average score for all auto insurance customers responding to the survey: 811 out of 1,000 points. This is slightly greater than the national study average of 804 points.

*7. Nationwide Auto Insurance – 799 points. Nationwide is only 12 points below the study average. Geico scored better in the survey, but it is only 31 points higher on a 1,000 point scale than Nationwide. If Geico & Nationwide quote you about the same price for the same coverage, you may prefer the company with a local agent over buying direct. If Nationwide has a competitive price for you, or a coverage you value not offered by another company, Nationwide may be a good choice for you.

8. AAA Missouri/Texas auto insurance – 795 points. This auto insurance subsidiary of AAA auto club is 16 points below the study average, which considering the 1,000 point scale, is not a large point difference. The survey results indicate AAA Missouri/Texas has better than average pricing, so if this AAA company is available where you live, you want to check how good the rates will be for you.

*9. Progressive auto insurance – 794 points. Progressive is only one point below AAA, but AAA received a 3 power circle rating (about average) for overall customer satisfaction, and Progressive received only 2 power circles (the rest). Progressive is also only 17 points below the region average. Progressive rated average for all factors, except Contacting the Insurance Company, which was below average. Since most people buy Progressive direct, without an agent, difficulty contacting the company can be a major problem. If you can find a better or similar scoring company with local agents, or buy Progressive from a local independent agent at a competitive price, it may be a better option for you.

*10. Allstate auto insurance – 792 points. Allstate is only 2 points below Progressive, and may be a better alternative if they have a similar price for you, because they have many agent office locations in most communities. Allstate customers questioned in this survey had lower than average customer satisfaction with contacting the insurance company, but making sure you select an Allstate agent with good communication skills and reliable follow-up can help you avoid this problem.

*11. Safeco auto insurance – 790 points. Safeco is only 2 points below Allstate, and 21 points below the regional average. Safeco customers indicated the most dissatisfaction with the coverage options available to them, and Safeco’s billing & Payment plans. Safeco is sold through independent agents representing several companies, so if you find a good, experienced independent agent, they can help you get the best service possible from Safeco, or offer you a company better suited to your needs, or at a better price.

The remaining companies on this list didn’t score significantly below average for customer satisfaction, but I would only consider them if they save you more money than the companies listed above, for the same type and amount of coverage.

*12. Farmers auto insurance – 787 points. Farmers is only 3 points below Safeco, and 24 points on the 1,000 point scale below the region average. However, like the rest of the companies on this list, Farmers customers surveyed reported below average satisfaction for all factors considered. If any of the companies above have better or slightly higher rates for the same coverage, I see no compelling reason to choose Farmers insurance.

The same applies to the following companies:

13. Travelers auto insurance – 780 points.

14. Farm Bureau Mutual auto insurance – 779 points.

15. Liberty Mutual auto insurance – 772 points. Liberty Mutual comes in last, and is 39 points below the region average. This is the same number point spread between the two top rated companies, USAA & Texas Farm Bureau. Percentage-wise, Liberty Mutual scored 77.2%, which would be a “C” when I was in school, which is not terrible. But unless Liberty Mutual has the lowest price for you, you can do a lot better choosing another company on this list.

The only way to make an informed choice about an auto insurance company is to consider the best combination of price, coverage, and service, by getting quotes from all the leading car insurance companies available to you.
