JD Power 2012 West Region Auto Insurance Study: Summary, Conclusions, & Shopping Tips

Here is my summary, conclusions, and shopping tips regarding the 2012 JD Power West Region auto insurance survey, measuring car insurance customer satisfaction in 10 Western states: Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. Remember, each state’s automobile insurance market is unique. The top insurance companies in Washington, Wyoming, and Arizona are likely to be different companies. Any of the companies on this list, and even smaller companies not making the list, might be the company saving you hundreds of dollars on your auto insurance. If you don’t want to grossly over-pay for auto insurance coverage, decide on the coverage you need, and get quotes for the same coverage from all the companies on this list, to find the companies with good service and competitive rates.

As is the case with all seven JD Power auto insurance customer satisfaction regional studies, the only company really distinguishing itself as standing head and shoulders above the rest, is USAA. Unfortunately, USAA is only available to military members, their immediate dependent family members (sons, daughters, spouse), and honorably discharged veterans. Also, you may not qualify based on your driving record, or other factors. For some people, and in some states, USAA does not have competitive rates (I believe this to be true for all insurance companies). If you are eligible for USAA, definitely get a quote. If great service is a priority for you, I think USAA may be worth paying more for your auto insurance, than other companies charging less for the same coverage.

Other than USAA, the company scores in the study range from a high of 837, to a low of 768, on a 1,000 point scale. Converted to a percentage score, the range is 76.8% to 83.7%. Although the top scoring company earns a 5 power circle rating (among the best), and the lowest scoring companies earn a 2 power circle rating (the rest), I don’t think a range of less than 7% means a 5 power circle rated company provides a lot better service than a 2 power circle rated company.

Below I list the scores of the companies included in the study, from highest scoring, to lowest scoring company, but I leave off the power circle rating, so you can more clearly see how each company performed for overall satisfaction, compared to other companies. For more details about each company’s JD Power rating in this survey, refer to my previous blog posts.

Not all companies insure all drivers. If you don’t have prior auto insurance, or you have tickets and/or accidents, or other issues, you may not qualify for all the companies on this list. If you have problems qualifying for car insurance, look for the companies I mark with an asterisk, which should be able to insure most drivers.

JD Power 2012 West Region Auto Insurance Study: 11 Companies ranked from Best to Worst for Overall Satisfaction

1,000 points is a perfect score.

1. USAA – 897 points. I discussed USAA limited eligibility above. USAA does not have local agents. If you are okay without having a personal agent, and meet its membership requirements, get a quote from the USAA website. USAA may have the best price for you. But if it doesn’t have the lowest price for you, you may consider choosing it for its high customer satisfaction rating.

2. State Farm – 837 points. Notice the big difference in points between USAA and State Farm? USAA scored a lot better, but State Farm is the only other company to score above the regional average, and did so by 27 points. If USAA is not available to you, or if you prefer having a local agent, State Farm should be your first choice, if their rates are reasonable for you. I would not pay a lot more for State Farm, but I would consider paying slightly more for it. You can get a quote or find agents nearest to you through the State Farm website.

The West region average score for all auto insurance customers responding to the survey: 810 out of 1,000 points. This is slightly higher than the national study average of 804 points.

*3. GEICO – 808 points. Geico sells direct form the company, but in some areas, usually major cities, Geico may have local agents. Geico rated 5 power circles for the Pricing category in this study, so this is a signal Geico may have competitive rates for you. Get a quote through the Geico website, or see if there are agents available where you live.

*4. American Family – 804 points. American Family sells insurance through its own agents located in your community. American Family is not available in every state. Visit their website for more information.

5. The Hartford – 803 points. Hartford sells insurance direct from its customer service centers and website. It also sells through independent insurance agents located in your community. The Hartford has a special auto insurance program for AARP (American Association of Retired People) members, which people age 50 or older can join.

*6. Progressive – 799 points. Progressive is well known for selling direct to the public, but it also sells auto insurance through local independent agents. Progressive has many different auto insurance companies, so keep in mind a quote from Progressive Northern Insurance Company will be different from Progressive Universal Insurance Company. Generally, you can get the best rate, and a nice discount for buying online, if you buy direct from Progressive. However, a large national agency, or an affiliate group, like a credit card company, or a college alumni association, might have the best rate for you. Progressive is the only other company besides Geico, rating about average for overall customer satisfaction, but above average — 4 power circles (better than most) — for Pricing.

7. Allstate – 797 points. You can buy or get a quote direct from Allstate, or by contacting one of Allstate’s local agents, whom seem to be everywhere. You can find the agent closest to you on the Allstate web site.

The remaining companies on this list didn’t score significantly below average for customer satisfaction, but I would only consider them if they save you more money than the companies listed above, for the same type and amount of coverage.

*8. Farmers – 787 points. You can get an auto insurance quote through the Farmers website. Farmers has its own local agents in most of the Western states included in this survey.

*9. Safeco – 786 points. Safeco sells through local independent insurance agents, but you can get a quote from their website, too.

10. Liberty Mutual – 784 points. Liberty Mutual owns a lot of auto insurance companies (such as Safeco), but this study applies to the Liberty Mutual companies sold direct from the company, and through its large sales offices, with several locations in most states. Liberty Mutual owns companies like Liberty Northwest, selling through independent insurance agents, emphasizing business insurance, which are not a part of this study.

*11. Nationwide – 768 points. Nationwide has fewer local agents in the Western US, compared to companies like State Farm, Farmers, Allstate, & American Family, and there may not be an agent located in your town. But you can get an auto insurance quote direct from the company, through its website or by phone. If Nationwide has a good rate for you, try to buy from an agent, if possible, for the likelihood of better service.

This completes my summary of the West region study. My next blog post will start the review of the Central region study.
