JD Power 2012 California Region Auto Insurance Study: Summary, Conclusions, & Shopping Tips

Now I have completed my review analyzing the scores behind the power circle ratings for each company in the JD Power 2012 California region auto insurance study, let me summarize the results, and give you tips on how to shop for the best rates, coverage, and service for you.If you want more information about this regional study’s results for each company, refer to my previous posts about the study, or read the company reviews on my site and blog.

I’m ranking the companies surveyed in the California region study from best to worst by their numerical score, but I am leaving off the Overall Customer Satisfaction power circle rating, which I think can sometimes be misleading as to how good or bad a company might be. I’ll also give you my opinion when I think you should choose a company only when it has the best price for you, because its customer satisfaction, based on the study, is below average.

You may not qualify for all these companies, based on your driving record, or other reasons. If you have a hard time qualifying for auto insurance, look for the companies I mark with an “*”. These companies, to my knowledge, also offer nonstandard auto insurance, for drivers just licensed, or with too many tickets, accidents, or serious driving offenses, etc.

Read my previous blog post to know how to best use my summary to find the best auto insurance company for you.

JD Power 2012 California Region Auto Insurance Study: 17 Companies ranked from Best to Worst for Overall Satisfaction.

1,000 points out of 1,000 points is a perfect score.

1. USAA – 912 points. USAA is the highest scoring company in this California region auto insurance survey, and in my opinion, the only company with strong enough customer satisfaction to be worth paying more for your auto insurance coverage. However, if you are not in the military, an immediate family member of someone in the military, or an honorably discharged veteran, you are not eligible for USAA. Also, USAA does not have local agents. If it’s important to you to have a local agent, USAA may not be the company for you.

2. Wawanesa Insurance – 823 points. Wawanesa also does not have local agents, and sells directly to the public from its call centers & website. Wawanesa was the only company, other than USAA, to earn a 5 power circle rating in the Pricing category.

3. Auto Club of Southern California – 807 points. ACSC sells auto insurance through independent agents, mainly located in AAA offices in Southern California.

4. State Farm – 806 points. You can get a car insurance quote through State Farm’s website, but it’s best to buy it from a local agent in your community. State Farm has agents everywhere in California.

*5. Geico – 801 points. Geico is best known for selling direct from its company, by calling them or through the Web. But in some areas of the state, Geico has agents representing them, though the nearest agent office may not be close to you. It’s better to have an agent accountable for the service you receive, even if their office is far from you. To my knowledge, the rates & Geico products are the same, if you buy from the company or an agent. You can confirm this by getting a quote online from the Geico website, then calling a local agent, whose contact information you can find on the Geico site.

6. The Hartford – 798 points. Hartford sells car insurance through its company website, and through independent agents located throughout California. The Hartford has a popular auto insurance program offered through AARP membership. So if you want to use an agent, and you are interested in the AARP program, make sure the agent you use offers it. You can find a local agent from Hartford’s website.

7. Ameriprise – 792 points. Ameriprise used to be called American Express, and one of its auto insurance subsidiaries is called IDS. Ameriprise sells direct to the public, and does not have local agents. Ameriprise also has a marketing relationship with Costco.

*8. Safeco – 786 points. Safeco sells through independent agents located throughout California. You can find a local agent, or get a price quote from the Safeco website.

The California region average score for all auto insurance customers responding to the survey: 785 out of 1,000 points.

9. Mercury Insurance – 780 points. You can use Mercury’s website to get a quote or locate an agent close to you. Although Mercury scored slightly below the regional average for Overall Satisfaction, it rated 4 power circles (better than most) in the Pricing category.

10. NCNU (Northern California, Nevada, & Utah / AAA – 779 points. NCNU/AAA auto insurance can be purchased by contacting independent agents, mainly located in AAA offices across Northern California.

*11. Progressive – 773 points. Progressive is known for selling direct to the public. Progressive also sells through independent agents, but the products & pricing offered through agents is different, and may cost more.

If you trust the JD Power study customer satisfaction results to be representative of acceptable customer service, you want to be more likely to avoid poor customer service, and don’t care about finding the lowest price, you can stick to getting quotes from the above companies. The remaining companies rated in the study are far enough below the survey average, you should only consider them if they have a great price for you. If you have a poor driving record, or issues keeping you from qualifying for auto insurance coverage with some companies, get quotes from companies marked below with an “*.”

12. Liberty Mutual — 770 points. You can get an auto insurance quote through the Liberty Mutual website, or buy it from a Liberty Mutual sales office located in several areas of California. Liberty also sells through independent agents, but it may be a different auto insurance product with different pricing, than what Liberty Mutual sells through its own agents.

*13. Allstate – 764 points. You can get a quote through the Allstate website, or by contacting an Allstate agent, located everywhere in California. If you have a bad driving record, or a problem getting auto insurance, agents may not be interested in selling you a policy. Contact Allstate directly to get a quote and buy, if you qualify.

*14. Nationwide Insurance – 761 points. Nationwide sells direct from the company, and through its own agents. However, there are few Nationwide agents located in California. Like with Allstate, if you have issues qualifying for auto insurance, it’s best to get a quote direct from the company. Call the company, if you can’t get a quote online from the Nationwide website

*15. 21st Century – 757 points. 21st Century sells car insurance through its web site & call centers. 21st Century does not have local agents, though there may be some independent agents in California representing them.

*16. Farmers Insurance – 754 points. You can get a quote through the Farmers website. Farmers has its own agents located throughout California. Like with Allstate & Nationwide, if you have problems qualifying for auto insurance, contact Farmers directly for a quote.

*17. Infinity – 705 points. Infinity is the lowest scoring company in the entire JD Power US auto insurance study, not just the California region. This is not surprising, because it is one of the few companies in the study specializing in nonstandard auto insurance. Nonstandard auto insurance companies are rarely known for good customer service. If you have a DUI, a few tickets or accidents, or other qualities creating a problem for you getting auto insurance, contact Infinity, to see if they can provide you with auto insurance coverage at a reasonable price. If you have a clean driving record, and most of the 11 top companies in this study will insure you, you can skip getting a quote from Infinity.

You can buy an auto insurance policy direct from the company, or you can request a quote through the Infinity website, or locate an independent agent close to you.

This completes the summary of the 17 companies included in the California region auto insurance study. My next blog post will review the results for the West region. Follow me on Twitter to find out when I get to the JD Power regional study covering your state.
