JD Power 2012 US Auto Insurance Study: Summary, Conclusions, & Shopping Tips

Before I write my summary of my analysis of the results for the JD Power 2012 California region auto insurance study, let me explain how to use the summaries I’m writing for the seven regional studies, making up the JD Power 2012 US auto insurance company customer satisfaction study, so you can find the auto insurance company with the best combination of coverage, service, & price for you.

I don’t think many auto insurance buyers choose a company on service alone, without consideration of price. So, I will list the companies rated by JD Power for each regional survey summary, from best to worst, discuss their strengths & weaknesses, and tell you which type of customers should get a quote from them.

My rule of thumb for shopping for car insurance is get as many companies to quote you as possible. Start by reading the summary of the company ranked number one, then contact them for a quote. Then get a quote from the company ranked number two, to see if they have a better price. Then contact the company ranked number 3, and so on, until you get quotes from all the companies ranked in the survey.

You may not be eligible for all companies. If you won’t buy auto insurance from companies without a local agent at any price, you can skip over companies selling direct to the public.

Make sure each company quotes you the same amount & types of coverage, so you can fairly compare the price among companies.

You may think you do not want to waste your time calling Company X, because you heard they have high rates. But you can’t trust rumors about a company’s car insurance rates, even from experienced insurance agents. One company having the lowest rates for some customers may have expensive rates for you.

My experience selling auto insurance led me to believe I knew the companies having good rates in my community. But it was not until I started shopping my auto insurance with as many companies as I could, did I become an expert on the companies having the best rates for me. Not only was I surprised by the companies having the best rates for me, I noticed the companies with the best rates for me changed as years went by.

I recommend every auto insurance buyer become an expert on the companies having the best rates for them now, by price shopping the rates of all the leading car insurance companies each year.

If you have a clean driving record and qualify for standard auto insurance, you can skip getting quotes from companies offering only nonstandard auto insurance, for high risk drivers with multiple tickets and accidents. I will indicate these companies when they appear in the JD Power study. But other than this exception, to paraphrase a popular car insurance commercial, investing 15 minutes with each company really can save you hundreds of dollars.

Never pass up the opportunity to see if you qualify for an auto insurance company and get a much lower price. You don’t have to change companies every 12 months, but not checking auto insurance rates each year leads to many people paying way too much for their insurance.

Work through the list of companies for the regional study where you live, to get quotes from the best rated companies to the worst.

If the first 5 companies all quote you between $500 & $600 every 6 months, don’t think $500 is the best you can do. You may find a company on the list willing to insure you for $300 or $400 every 6 months.

Both highly rated companies & low rated companies in the survey may have low rates for you. Work through the entire list to find out the prices for all the companies, so you can make an informed decision.

If getting the best price for your auto insurance is the most important thing to you, get quotes from all the companies on the list, unless I specify you are not the type of driver best suited for the company.

If you want a good price, but you also want acceptable customer service, work through the list of companies, starting at the top, until I indicate the companies below average that I think only should be considered if they have a low price.

With a few exceptions, many of the companies in the JD Power regional studies provide close to the same level of customer satisfaction, whether they were rated at 5 power circles, 4 power circles, or 3 power circles (about average). In fact, some companies rated 2 power circles (the rest) are pretty close to average. As I interpret the JD Power scores, very few companies stood out as great or poor performers.

My study summaries will point out the very few top rated companies, scoring high enough above the competition, to distinguish themselves as providing superior customer satisfaction, for those customers caring more about service than price.

I think the annual JD Power auto insurance study is one of the few reliable measures of customer satisfaction available to consumers. However, since few companies stand out as great or horrible, price needs to be considered, in addition to using my analysis of the JD Power ratings, before ruling out most insurance companies.

I wouldn’t pay twice as much, or even 50% or 25% more, for a 5 power circle rated company, instead of a 3 power circle rated company, when the higher rated company scored only 31 points more on a 1,000 point scale than the lower rated company.

For example, a company ranked number 2 on my survey summary may be willing to insure you at $350 every 6 months, when the other top 6 companies want to charge you $500 every 6 months. You may be tempted to stop shopping and choose the company ranked at number 4. But if you keep getting quotes, you may find the company ranked at number 8 will insure you for $300 every 6 months with the same coverage. You read my analysis of the JD Power scores for the number 2 and number 8 ranked companies, and decide the number 8 ranked company is the best combination of price and service for you.

If you have tickets or accidents, or a major violation like a drug or alcohol driving offense or reckless driving, a suspended drivers license, or not licensed for at least the last 3 years, no prior insurance, or other reasons, you may find companies unwilling to insure you.

Although the company rules & regulations about auto insurance eligibility are different in every state, vary by company, and change over time, I will let you know the companies I understand to insure most drivers, as well as pointing out more selective companies. If you have issues at this time making it hard for you to qualify for auto insurance, don’t let that keep you from shopping. I’ll try to let you know the companies more likely to help you.

Tomorrow, I’ll post my summary for the California study results. If you don’t live in California, be patient. I should have summarized all 7 regional studies, covering 48 states, in the next 45 days. Follow me on Twitter (see the last paragraph) to see when I get to your region of the country.
