Alaska Auto Insurance Companies Ranked By Complaints

Most consumers fail to check the complaint records of their insurance companies. I am blogging about each state’s complaint information to rank auto & home insurance companies, when available. Today, we are looking at auto insurance companies offering coverage in Alaska. The 8 auto insurance companies appearing in this blog represent 94.7% of the Alaskan auto insurance market in 2009, and they are ranked from best to worst, by their complaint records. The complaint information is also from 2009, the latest year of data available on Alaska’s Division of Insurance Web site. I’m always blogging to help you get the best policies and prices for auto, home, & life insurance, so bookmark or place my website in your favorites!

Although the ratings I list on my Insurance Company Reviews Web page are useful, a car insurance company providing good or great customer service & claims handling in some states, may not perform well in other states. An auto insurance company with few complaints nationwide, may not be the best insurance company for you, if the company has a high number of complaints in your state.

One drawback about Alaska’s complaint information is it shows the number of complaints against the insurance company, but does not specify the type of insurance receiving the complaint.

For example, if a company receives a total of 8 complaints, you don’t know if any of the complaints are regarding personal auto insurance. All 8 complaints could be regarding business insurance policies. However, the main business for the 8 insurance companies I rank in this blog is personal auto insurance and/or home insurance, so the complaints against these insurance companies should be considered by Alaska auto & home insurance consumers.

Don’t use the list below as your sole source of information for deciding on an insurance company. Use the information on my Web site (see the link above) to help you, too.

Consider the example of USAA, which has a great national reputation, but does not rank well in Alaska. Alaska’s location & climate pose challenges to insurance companies — in fact, several major insurance companies do not offer coverage in Alaska due to these challenges. The difficulties of providing auto insurance in Alaska may be a reason USAA is not as good a choice for Alaskans, as USAA may be for people in other states, or it may be USAA’s complaint record for 2009 in Alaska is not truly representative of USAA’s customer service.

I rank the auto insurance companies by the percentage of actual complaints exceeding expected complaints (as determined by the Alaska Division of insurance, based on the insurance company’s market share), from best to worst. I use information from Alaska’s Division of Insurance Web site, which you can find on my list of Insurance Regulatory Web sites by State.
