Term Life Insurance Rates: 52, 53, 54, 55 Year Old Non Smoker

How much is term life insurance for a 52, 53, 54, or 55 year old man or woman? Surprisingly, even in your early 50s, term life insurance can be affordable. Females pay a lower rate than males, because women, as a group, live longer than men. Which life insurance company will have the lowest rates for you will depend, not only on your age, sex, and tobacco use, but on the amount of the death benefit, the length of the term (10, 15, 20, 30 year term), your health and your family heath history. Even the payment plan you choose will decide which company will have the best life insurance rates for you: the company with the lowest monthly premium is not likely to have the lowest annual premium for you.

The latter part of this blog post will show you the range of low rates for a 15 year term life insurance policy for $100,000, $250,000, $500,000, & 1 million dollars of coverage, to help you find a good deal, as you shop for life insurance. But first, let me tell you some things you need to consider before you go shopping for low life insurance rates.

The purpose of a term life insurance in you early 50s is to cover a temporary need, like to pay off a debt you don’t want left to the people you leave behind, or a need for income replacement until you are retired or close to retirement. If you are thinking about life insurance in your fifties, you may want an affordable type of permanent life insurance policy, which pays no matter what age you die, instead of if you die before the age the term insurance policy stops.

A fifteen year term policy will cover a 52 year old until age 67. You may decide a 10 year term or 20 year term meets your needs better. Click this link to my previous blog post, if you are unsure if you need term or permanent life insurance, where I start discussing how to decide in the fourth paragraph.

During my research of term life insurance rates, the big brand name insurance companies, like Prudential, New York Life, & Metlife, are not likely to have low rates for you. The big name auto & home insurance companies, like Allstate Insurance, State Farm, & Farmers, are also usually poor choices for life insurance, since these agents represent only one company, have higher prices, and lack real knowledge of the life insurance market. These companies love to sell life insurance, and train their agents to try to sell a lot of expensive permanent insurance & annuities to their auto & home insurance customers, but it is rarely a good deal for you.

Life insurance companies which sell direct to the public, and do not have agents to pay a commission, like TIAA-CREF & Ameritas, often charge higher rates, too, and do not pass savings on to their customers. With auto & home insurance, some of the companies selling direct to the public compete by having low rates. When it comes to term life insurance, avoiding an insurance agent commission does not get you a better price.

However, there are many large, financially stable life insurance companies with great rates, possibly unknown to you because they don’t spend money on advertising, and market & sell their insurance through independent insurance agents.

When you shop for term life insurance, it’s okay to get quotes from your auto or home insurance agent, and other brand name companies, But you need to include one or two truly independent agents, representing many life insurance companies, and showing an expertise in helping their customers find & get the company with the best rates.

It’s easy for anyone to go on the Internet and find a website quoting term life insurance rates, by putting in your age, sex, location, amount of coverage, and length of term, to find the company with the lowest rates.

However, to know if you qualify for the company with the lowest rates will depend on your weight, health, medical history, family history, and the results of the physical exam the insurance company requires you to take.

You could be a healthy vegan who competes in triathlons, but if you have a parent who had a heart attack before age 60, you may not qualify for the lowest preferred plus rates with some insurance companies. Or, you and your family could be in perfect health, but if you eat the wrong type of meal the night before your medical exam, the results may disqualify you for the low rates you expected.

Independent agents have the freedom to work with many companies, and a good agent knows how to help you qualify for the company with the best rates for you, given your unique health & family history, and guide you through the application process until your coverage is approved. Don’t rely on only one agent you trust. It’s important to work with someone you trust, but you should verify they are trustworthy by getting the opinions of other agents.

Now that you have some idea how to shop for term life insurance, let’s look at some rates.

This first section of rates will show you what type of rates to expect if you qualify for the lowest rates in the best health rating class.

As you can see, if you need a million dollars of life insurance coverage, it can be costly at standard rates. But the great thing about term life insurance is you can adjust the amount of the death benefit, and/or the length of the term, to lower the premium and fit your budget.

I can’t stress the importance of checking with multiple agents, particularly if you have any health conditions. You could be diabetic, or take a heart medication, and offered something higher than standard rates, called table rating. But a knowledgeable agent might represent companies with expertise in these conditions, and may be able to get you standard rates, where other companies will charge you twice as much, or won’t insure you at all.

If you are not doing so, be sure to shop your auto & home insurance each year. Many people pay twice as much as they could be paying for the same or better coverage. Saving money on your other insurance policies can help you pay for the life insurance you need. Don’t procrastinate. Start getting auto insurance quotes now. When you find lower rates, you can use the car & home insurance reviews on my website, smartshopyourcarinsurance.com, to choose a good company, see insurance company complaint ratings, and find additional leading insurance companies.
