Wyoming Auto & Home Insurance Reviews: Complaint Ratings for Major Companies

Does your insurance company have a lot of complaints? Will you have difficulty placing a claim, or have a valid claim delayed or denied? How do you know if your company is good or bad? Most consumers fail to check the complaint records of their automobile & property (homeowners, renters, mobile home, rental dwelling, condo, etc.) insurance companies. Here I provide complaint information for insurance companies selling auto & residential property insurance in Wyoming and rank them, from best to worst, based on their 2009, 2010, & 2011 Wyoming complaint record.

The Wyoming Insurance Department website is the source of my information about insurance company complaint information. The Wyoming complaint ratio is determined by the number of complaints per one million dollars of direct written insurance premium for each company. The ratio is used so you can compare the complaint records among insurance companies fairly.

For example, Progressive Northern Insurance Company had .4537 complaints per one million dollars of insurance premium it collected in Wyoming for 2011. Fire Insurance Exchange, a Farmers Insurance Group company, had .5365 complaints per one million dollars of insurance premium it collected in Wyoming for 2011, which is almost 20% more complaints per one million dollars of premium than Progressive.

The complaint ratio is important, because an insurance company with a lot more customers is likely to have a larger number of complaints than a smaller insurance company, because it handles more customer transactions.

For example, a large insurance company may handle 1,200 theft claims, and have 6 valid complaints in regards to how these claims were handled. A smaller insurance company may have 200 theft claims, and only two complaints.

Even though the larger insurance company has three times the number of complaints than the smaller insurance company, the larger insurance company has 1 complaint per 200 claims, and the smaller company has 1 complaint per 100 claims. The larger insurance company really has the better complaint record.

The Wyoming complaint ratio uses the number of insurance complaints per one million dollars of premium, so you can compare an insurance company complaint record with other companies fairly, regardless of the size of the companies.

However, unlike some other states, Wyoming does not calculate its complaint ratio based on a line of insurance, such as auto insurance.

Wyoming lumps together all complaints for property & casualty insurance, including home & auto insurance, together for a single company.

Unlike the national complaint ratios on my website, each insurance company’s Wyoming complaint ratio is not compared to an average number of complaints for the insurance industry. The Wyoming complaint ratio is useful only when comparing insurance companies.

For example, Safeco Insurance Company of America has about 50% more complaints in 2011 than State Farm Fire & Casualty, but they are both pretty good complaint records, when compared with some of the other insurance companies in Wyoming.

You want to consider other factors, beyond one year’s complaint ratio, when deciding on an insurance company. I list the complaint ratios for 2009, 2010, and 2011. This includes all companies with 4 or more complaints each year. If an insurance company is not on any of these lists, it’s a very good sign. It means the company has no more than 3 complaints each year.

Insurance companies frequently have several subsidiary insurance companies, and the name of the subsidiary may be different than the parent insurance group. For example, State Farm Insurance includes State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance company, as well as State Farm Fire & Casualty Company. Make sure you know the insurance group, and the name of the insurance subsidiary company quoting or insuring you, to check the proper complaint ratio.
