Utah Auto Insurance Reviews: Complaint Ratings for 20 Top Companies

Does your car insurance company have many complaints? Will you have difficulty placing a claim, or have a valid claim delayed or denied? How do you know if your company is good or bad? Most consumers fail to check the complaint records of their insurance companies. Here I provide complaint information for the twenty largest (by market share in Utah, based on premium) auto insurance companies & rank them, from best to worst, based on the average of each company’s Utah auto insurance complaint record for the last three years — 2008, 2009, & 2010. Utah complaint data for 2011 is not available yet.

The Utah Insurance Department website is the source of my information about market share & complaint information. The Utah complaint ratio is determined by the number of complaints each year per 100,000 dollars of direct written auto insurance premium by the company for the same year. The ratio is used so you can compare the complaint records among car insurance companies fairly.

For example, Geico General Insurance Company in 2010 had .008 auto insurance complaints per $100,000 of auto insurance premium it collected in 2010. State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company had .001 auto insurance complaints in 2010 per $100,000 of auto insurance premium it collected in 2010. Geico General had 8 times as many complaints per $100,000 of car insurance premium than State Farm Mutual Auto Insurance Company in 2010. But both of these companies have a better 2010 auto insurance complaint ratio than American National Property & Casualty Company, which at .010, is greater than 20% more complaints than Geico General, and ten times more than the 2010 auto insurance complaint ratio for State Farm Mutual.

The complaint ratio is more important than the total number of complaints, because an auto insurance company with a lot more customers is likely to have a larger number of complaints than a smaller car insurance company, because it handles many more customer transactions.

For example, a big insurance company may handle 4,000 total loss auto claims, and have eight valid complaints in regards to how these claims were handled. A smaller car insurance company may have 1,000 total loss auto claims, and only four valid complaints.

Even though the larger insurance company had two times the number of complaints than the smaller car insurance company, the larger insurance company has 1 complaint per 500 claims, and the smaller company has 1 complaint per 250 claims. The larger insurance company really has the better complaint record.

The Utah complaint ratio uses the number of Utah car insurance complaints per $100,000 of premium, so you can compare an insurance company’s complaint records with other companies fairly, regardless of the size of the companies.

Unlike the national complaint ratios on my website, each insurance company’s Utah auto insurance complaint ratio is not compared to an average number of complaints for the auto insurance market. The Utah complaint ratio is useful only when comparing insurance companies.

For example, at .002, Progressive Classic has twice as many complaints as State Farm Mutual, at .001, in 2010. But those are both low complaint ratios, when compared to Geico General’s .008 2010 auto insurance complaint ratio, and we don’t know how any of these companies compare to the industry average.

You want to consider other factors, beyond a single year’s complaint ratio, when deciding on an insurance company. I combine and take the average for the auto insurance complaint ratios for each company for 2008, 2009, & 2010, if the company was among the top 20 biggest auto insurers for all three years.

The 20 top companies insuring cars in Utah covers 74.90% of the Utah auto insurance market in 2010. There are 165 auto insurance companies in Utah as of 2010. Some of them are name brand national insurance companies with great reputations, like Amica, but their market share in Utah is not large enough to make the list of top 20 companies. Some of these smaller companies may have great rates, and be the best choice for you.

Insurance companies frequently have several subsidiary auto insurance companies, and the name of the subsidiary may be different than the parent insurance group. For example, Farmers Insurance Exchange, and Mid-Century Insurance Company are owned by Farmers Insurance Group and sold by Farmers agents. Make sure you know the name of the insurance subsidiary company quoting or insuring you, to check the proper complaint ratio.
