South Dakota Auto Insurance Reviews: Complaint Ratings for 30 Companies

Does your automobile insurance company have a very large amount of customer complaints? Will you have problems placing a claim, or have a valid claim delayed or denied? Is your auto insurance company any good? Will you have a bad experience when you need your insurance company? Most consumers fail to check the complaint records of their car & homeowners insurance companies. This blog post provides complaint information for the thirty largest insurance companies selling auto insurance in South Dakota (based on 2011 market share), and rates & ranks them based on their 2010 national complaint record (Accurate 2011 complaint data is not available yet). Know about the best & worst insurance companies in South Dakota!

I blog frequently to help you get the best policies & prices for auto, home, & life insurance, so bookmark my site, or place it in your favorites!

With my state reviews, I prefer to use state complaint statistics, to tell you if an insurance company has a better or worse complaint record in your state, compared to the state record of competing insurance companies.

Unfortunately, not every state’s insurance department provides state complaint data. South Dakota is one state not having them available. I like it when states provide state complaint ratios. Complaint ratios are helpful to compare insurance companies, to see if a single insurance company has a higher than average, or lower than average number of auto insurance complaints, or more or less auto insurance complaints as compared to other companies.

A state’s insurance department website is usually a good place to find out consumer information about insurance & insurance companies.

Here’s the link to the South Dakota Division of Insurance Web site, which I used as a resource to find the 30 biggest insurance companies, covering about the top 86% of the 2011 S. Dakota auto insurance market, insuring motor vehicles in the state.

As I mentioned, it helps to have an insurance company’s complaint ratio to fairly compare one insurance company’s complaint record with another insurance company’s complaint record.

I devised a letter grade system, using the national auto insurance complaint ratios from my website, for the insurance companies listed below, to make it easy to tell an auto insurance company with a great or good complaint record, from an auto insurance company with a poor or average complaint record.

I list all the companies with close to 1% or more of the South Dakota auto insurance market. But there are many more insurance companies selling car insurance in South Dakota, and a good percentage (roughly 20% of the market) of these companies have less than 1% market share, including big national insurance companies, like Amica, Travelers, Hartford, Liberty Mutual, Nationwide, and Metropolitan (Metlife). These companies may provide great service, and/or have the lowest rates for you.

You can find information about other auto & home insurance companies by going to my website. You can see more national auto & home insurance complaint ratios for other companies not on the list below, in addition to AM Best financial strength ratings and JD Power customer satisfaction ratings for all the major auto & home insurance companies in the USA.

Here is my grading system. Additionally, I list the national auto insurance complaint ratio for each company (the lower the number the better the complaint record).

A+ = Insurance companies with complaints 25% or less than the average insurance company.

A = Insurance companies with complaints 50% or less than the average insurance company.

B = Insurance companies with complaints 90% or less than the average insurance company.

C = Insurance companies with complaints from 90% to 110% of the average insurance company.

D = Insurance companies with complaints from 110% to 200% of the average insurance company.

F = Insurance companies with complaints over 200% of the average insurance company. More than twice as much as average!

Consider these grades, along with price and other factors (as listed on my website), before choosing an auto insurance company.

Insurance companies usually have several subsidiary auto insurance companies. Make sure you know the correct name of the insurance subsidiary quoting or insuring you, to check the proper complaint grade.

For example, American Family has several auto insurance companies selling car insurance in the USA. Two of these companies are on this list: American Family Mutual Insurance Company & American Standard Insurance Company of Wisconsin. If the subsidiary insurance company quoting or insuring you is not on this list, check the insurance review for the parent company on my website to find it. If you can’t locate it, e-mail me, or leave a message for me on Facebook or Twitter, and I will research it for you. See my contact information at the end of this blog post.

If you want to decrease the chance of having a problem with your auto insurance, go with the highest ranked automobile insurance company, although it could cost more. The good news is the best insurance companies often have very good rates. You can insure with a better insurance company AND save money!
