South Carolina Nonstandard Auto Insurance Reviews: Complaint Ratings for 21 Companies

When you have had a US drivers license for 9 years or more, a clean driving record & claims history, and a long, current, continuous auto insurance history, every car insurance company wants to insure you. But if you are a younger, less experienced driver, or have some tickets or accidents, or no auto insurance now, or a gap in your auto insurance history, some insurance companies won’t insure you. Depending on your situation, A LOT of car insurance companies may not be willing to insure you. If you are one of these drivers, or have one of these drivers living in your household, your only option may be nonstandard auto insurance at high rates. I am blogging today to help you find auto insurance companies willing to insure you at the best price, and avoid companies with poor complaint records.

I blog frequently to help you get the best policies & prices for auto, home, & life insurance, so bookmark or place my site in your favorites!

Nonstandard auto insurance can go by different names — “substandard,” “specialty,” or “high risk” auto insurance — but it’s usually a subsidiary company of a larger insurance organization, designed to insure drivers insurance companies consider much more likely to have more claims, or more expensive claims, than the average driver. Nonstandard auto insurance companies not only have much higher rates, but they tend to have more complaints with their service.

This blog post gives you the national complaint ratings for the major nonstandard auto insurance companies selling auto insurance in South Carolina. Most of these companies sell auto insurance in many states, so if you live in another state, and have a problem qualifying for standard auto insurance, you should review the list of companies below, too.

When you shop around and find out a few insurance companies won’t insure you, it may be hard to know which companies can help you. The information in this blog post can help you find not only companies willing to insure you at a better price, but get a better price AND better service. It can also help you avoid companies which may be a nightmare for you if you need assistance, have a problem, or file a claim. Be sure to share the link to this post with any friends or family having issues qualifying for auto insurance, or paying too much for it.

Not all these companies may be nonstandard auto insurance companies in all states. For example, Allstate Indemnity Company is Allstate’s nonstandard auto insurance subsidiary company in most states. But in California, it’s a standard/preferred auto insurance company. Also, for other types of insurance, such as commercial auto for businesses, or homeowners insurance, Allstate Indemnity Company is not a nonstandard company. So, if your home is insured with Allstate Indemnity Company, don’t think you are lumped together with high risk homeowners and paying higher rates. Although, you need to shop your insurance each year to make sure you have the best coverage at the best price. If it has been years since you shopped with all the leading insurance companies, you probably are paying too much.

Not all these companies may be selling new auto insurance policies. For example, I know in Oregon, where I live, Nationwide Assurance Company, which is on the list below, is not selling new policies. Nationwide uses its nonstandard subsidiaries, Titan or Victoria, to sell nonstandard auto insurance in my state, which Nationwide can quote you if you call the company directly.

Unfortunately, if you, your spouse, or your resident child have a poor driving record, insurance companies & agents often treat you as a second class customer, and act as if they are doing you a favor by quoting your car insurance, or offering to insure you. I think it is best to choose a company or agent selling both standard and nonstandard auto insurance, like Progressive, Esurance, or Geico, or companies using agents like Allstate & American Family (if the agent sells nonstandard auto insurance), than agents or companies selling ONLY nonstandard auto insurance.

To find additional companies insuring almost all drivers, or high risk drivers, please refer to a previous blog post I wrote to help you find the best nonstandard auto insurance rates.

Here’s another link to the South Carolina Department of Insurance Web site, which I used as a resource to find these twenty-one nonstandard auto insurance companies selling auto insurance in South Carolina.

I devised a letter grade system, using the national auto insurance complaint ratios from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners website, for the insurance companies listed below, to make it easy to tell an auto insurance company with a great or good complaint record, from an auto insurance company with a poor or average complaint record.

You can find information about other auto & home insurance companies on the main page of my website, where you can see more national auto & home insurance complaint ratios for other companies not on the list below, in addition to AM Best financial strength ratings and JD Power customer satisfaction ratings for all the major auto and homeowners insurance companies in the USA.

Here is my grading system. I also list the national complaint ratio for each company. The lower the number the better the complaint record. The higher the number the worse the complaint record.

A+ = Insurance companies with complaints 25% or less than the average insurance company.

A = Insurance companies with complaints 50% or less than the average insurance company.

B = Insurance companies with complaints 90% or less than the average insurance company.

C = Insurance companies with complaints from 90% to 110% of the average insurance company.

D = Insurance companies with complaints from 110% to 200% of the average insurance company.

F = Insurance companies with complaints over 200% of the average insurance company. More than twice as much as average!

Consider these grades, along with price and other factors (as listed on my website), when choosing an auto insurance company.

Insurance companies frequently have several subsidiary auto insurance companies. Make sure you know the correct name of the insurance subsidiary quoting or insuring you, to check the proper complaint grade.

For example, Progressive has many auto insurance companies selling car insurance in the USA, and three of these companies are on this list: Progressive Northern Insurance Company, Progressive Max Insurance Company, & Progressive Direct Insurance Company. If the subsidiary insurance company quoting or insuring you is not on this list, check the insurance review for the parent company on my website to find it. If you can’t locate it, e-mail me, or leave a message for me on Facebook or Twitter, & I will research it for you. See my contact information at the end of this blog post.

If you want to decrease the chance of having a problem with your insurance company, go with the highest ranked automobile insurance company, although it could cost more. The good news is the best auto insurance companies often have very good rates. You can insure with a better insurance company AND save money!

Here’s the list. Remember to shop with as many companies as possible, so you can find the best rates, service, & coverage for you.
