I’m blogging today to warn people about the aggressive telemarketing used by this company, yourinsurancerequests.com, and how to get auto insurance quotes on the Internet without having to worry about constant telemarketing calls. There are a lot of people complaining about YourInsuranceRequests.com, but I want to clear up a few misconceptions people have about the nature of this company, and what can be done about them. Repeatedly calling people who do not wish to be contacted, and ignoring their requests to be placed on their company’s “Do Not Call” list, should subject them to fines. I, myself, am interested in joining any class action lawsuit suing them for harassment.

Please be aware there is another website by a different company, MyInsuranceRequest.com, which has NOTHING to do with these telemarketing calls, so please do not call them or contact them about this problem.

This previous Friday, a company identifying itself as YourInsuranceRequests.com called me three times. The first time I answered, a guy asked for me by my first name, and after I identified myself, he started talking about receiving my request for an auto insurance quote. When I tried to stop him by saying I had not requested an auto insurance quote, he kept talking, verifying my e-mail address, and wishing me a nice weekend, as if I was not speaking at all. As he came close to ending his phone script, I said do not send me any quotes, put me on your do not call list, and do not contact me again, and I hung up the phone. They called me two more times after the first call that day, and I said the same thing to them twice more.

I was curious, so I did an Internet search for the company, and found many people, some claiming to be on the national do not call registry, complaining about being harassed for months by this company, & getting called every day.

So far, they have not called me again. How did they get my information?

I shop my auto & home insurance every year with all the leading insurance companies, as I recommend to everyone. Although my driving record has not changed for decades, shopping each year has been a great way for me to save money. If you stay with the same insurance company for years and years, and never shop for better rates or coverage, it’s not unusual for you to be paying twice as much as you could be paying. And paying less for auto insurance does not mean you get what you pay for — you can save a lot of money, get better coverage, AND better service.

A good way to save time is to use a website which quotes you multiple insurance companies, by taking your information online and forwarding it to agents and insurance companies to contact you with quotes. These websites are owned by companies called lead generation companies. They don’t sell insurance, but sell your information as “leads” to insurance companies and agents. The agents & companies pay the lead generation company a small fee for the opportunity to quote you, and the possibility to sell you a policy.

I’ve used these sites before, and agents have contacted me by phone to give me price quotes, and if they didn’t save me any money, or I was no longer interested, I never heard from them again.

But once you give your information to a lead generation company, they keep it, and sometimes sell it to other lead generation companies at a later time.

If you ever shopped online for auto insurance quotes, then got a call or e-mail three months, six months, or twelve months later, saying they have received your request for an auto insurance quote, and you freak out because they have your information about your car, but you have not recently requested a quote, this is what happened. The information you gave 6 months ago was resold, or the company is following up to see if you want to shop again, so it can sell you as a “fresh” lead to agents & insurance companies.

The company calling me understood and did not call me again.

It’s about time for me to shop my insurance again, so agreeing to have YourInsuranceRequests.com send me quotes is not necessarily a bad idea. But they came off as too aggressive, trying to force me to get quotes, so there is no way I’m going to let this company make money off me.

One misconception I want people to know is YourInsuranceRrequests.com is not an insurance company. It is a lead generation company selling your information to insurance companies. At least that is what I think they are. I know they are not an insurance company. But they seem shady and crafty. There are stories on the Web about them refusing to identify themselves. I went to their website, and they don’t collect information on you. You put in your zip code, and links to legitimate insurance companies, like Esurance, pop up. I’m sure they get paid for you clicking on the links, but they are not gathering your information to sell to companies. They may have a sideline business of buying old leads — its been over a year since I requested a quote through a lead generation website — and try to make them “fresh” by calling you, so they can sell them. Or, the telemarketers may be lying about being affiliated with YourInsuranceRequests.com.

I think if they call you, and they can get through their phone script without you saying, “no,” they can sell your information as a lead to insurance companies. But any agent paying for the lead will expect a credit when they contact you and find out you are really not interested. If you are on the national “Do Not Call” list, they can’t call you 3 months after your original quote request, without your permission. Since this company has no interest in following the law, I don’t know why they bother to call, and just sell our information as leads anyway. No matter, it’s not a sustainable business model, so I’m sure they will go out of business soon.

The problem is, if they get sued or receive substantial fines, it’s easy to dissolve the company and start a new one under a new name.

I’m going to contact the insurance companies YourInsuranceRequests.com links to through their website, and let them know how this company is conducting business.

I’m sure the telemarketing calls people are complaining about are generated automatically by computer. Your phone will ring only three times, then disconnect. They never leave a voice message. The call only gets transferred to a live call center representative if you pick up and answer in time. I don’t think the calls are deliberate harassment. They just don’t have any incentive to take you out of their system, so you keep getting the computer calls, and I guess a certain percentage give in and agree to get a quote on the 5th, 6th, (15th? 101st?) attempt to contact you.

The best & safest way to get insurance quotes on the Internet is to get quotes through each insurance company’s website, or talk to a local agent. Insurance companies want to sell you their insurance, and won’t sell your information. They may call you to follow up on a quote. They may even be persistent until they reach you, but they won’t harass you. If you tell them to stop calling, they will stop calling you.
