Worst Michigan Auto Insurance Company(ies)

Auto insurance companies, with a lot of complaints filed against them with the Michigan Department of Insurance, are companies best to be avoided. Here is a list of car insurance companies with some of the worst complaint ratios in Michigan. Check out this list, and if you are insured with any of these companies, it may be a good idea to shop for an auto insurance company with a better complaint record. Don’t be surprised you can both save money and get better service!

This blog post is a companion to my recent post, which you can see by clicking the link at the end of this sentence, providing the complaint ratings for the 40 largest car insurance companies in Michigan. The 40 major companies I reviewed cover the majority of the Michigan car insurance market.

However, there are many companies not making the list. The majority of cars are insured by insurance companies with only about 1-2 percent of market share.

So, to supplement my complaint information about the 40 top companies, I want to point out companies with poor Michigan complaint records, not making the top 40 list.

I’m always blogging to help you get the best policies and prices for auto, home, & life insurance, so bookmark or place my website in your favorites!

The Michigan Office of Financial & Insurance Regulation website is the source of my information about market share & complaint information. The Michigan complaint ratio is determined by the number of complaints per one million dollars of direct written car insurance premium. The ratio is used so you can compare the complaint records among car insurance companies fairly.

I list the Michigan complaint ratio, but keep in mind all these companies have relatively poor complaint records. Insurance companies with very small market shares can have high complaint ratios by having only one valid complaint. To be fair, I considered the size of the company and only list companies with 4 complaints or more.

As I say, don’t weigh the complaint ratio numbers too heavily. Bristol West Insurance Company’s Michigan auto insurance complaint ratio is .64, and National General Insurance Company’s complaint ratio is .36, but they each had 4 complaints in 2010, which I think is a high number of complaints for both companies, considering the complaint records of  other companies of similar size. To make it clear, I grade all these companies with an “F.”

Many of these companies specialize in nonstandard auto insurance, which insures young drivers, drivers without prior insurance, drivers with too many tickets, accidents, or a major violation, like a DUI or reckless driving. Nonstandard auto insurance is for people not qualifying for standard auto insurance rates.

If you are insured with any of the companies on this list, you may want to contact Geico, Progressive, or Esurance (You should get quotes from all three companies, and others), which have better complaint records and will insure almost all drivers. These 3 companies often have very good rates, too.

Usually, you shouldn’t choose a car insurance company based on one year’s complaint record, but if your auto insurance company makes this list, I think you should at least consider changing insurance companies. At the very least, you should shop around to see what other insurance companies can do for you.

You can use the information I provide on my website to find all the leading companies, know their JD Power customer satisfaction ratings, AM Best financial strength ratings, and national complaint ratings, as well as other useful information.

Insurance companies frequently have several subsidiary auto insurance companies, and the name of the subsidiary may be different than the parent insurance group.

For example, Bristol West, is a part of Farmers Insurance Group, which is a part of Zurich Insurance. Make sure you know the name of the insurance subsidiary company quoting or insuring you, to check the proper complaint ratio.

Here’s my list:
