Michigan Home Insurance Reviews: Complaint Ratings for 40 Top Companies

Does your home insurance company have too many complaints? Will you have difficulty placing a claim, or have a valid claim delayed or denied? How do you know if your company is any good or bad? Most consumers fail to check the complaint records of their insurance companies. Here I provide complaint information for forty of the largest (by market share in Michigan, based on premium) home insurance companies and rank them, from best to worst, based on their 2010 record of homeowners insurance complaints in Michigan (Accurate 2011 data is not available yet).

The Michigan Office of Financial & Insurance Regulation website is the source of my information about home insurance market share & complaint information. The Michigan complaint ratio is determined by the number of complaints per one million dollars of direct written home insurance premium. The ratio is used so you can compare the complaint records among insurance companies fairly.

For example, MEEMIC Insurance Company had .04 complaints per one million dollars of home insurance premium it collected in 2010. State Farm Fire & Casualty Company had .14 complaints per one million dollars of home insurance premium it collected in 2010, which is 3.5 times the number of complaints per one million dollars of premium than MEEMIC Insurance. But both of these companies have a much better 2010 complaint ratio than Nationwide Mutual Fire Insurance Company, which at .36, is greater than 2.5 times more than State Farm’s 2010 complaint ratio.

The complaint ratio is important, because an insurance company with a lot more customers is likely to have a larger number of complaints than a small insurance company, because it handles many more customer transactions.

For example, a big insurance company may handle 3,000 property theft claims, and have 3 valid complaints in regards to how these claims were handled. A small insurance company may have 500 property theft claims, and only one valid complaint.

Even though the big insurance company had three times the number of complaints than the small insurance company, the larger insurance company has 1 complaint per 1,000 claims, and the small company has 1 complaint per 500 claims. The larger insurance company really has the better complaint record.

The Michigan complaint ratio uses the number of Michigan home insurance complaints per one million dollars of premium, so you can compare an insurance company’s complaint records with other companies fairly, regardless of the size of the insurance companies.

Unlike the national complaint ratios on my website, each insurance company’s Michigan complaint ratio is not compared to an average number of complaints for the auto insurance market. The Michigan complaint ratio is useful only when comparing insurance companies.

Using the example from above, State Farm has 3.5 times the number of complaints than MEEMIC Insurance Company, but they are both good complaint records, when compared with some of the other homeowners insurance companies in Michigan.

You want to consider other factors, beyond a single year’s complaint ratio, when deciding on an insurance company.

Insurance companies frequently have several subsidiary home insurance companies, and the name of the subsidiary may be different than the parent insurance group. For example, Citizen’s Insurance Company of America is owned by Hanover Insurance Group. Make sure you know the name of the insurance subsidiary company quoting or insuring you, to check the proper complaint ratio.
