Worst Washington State Auto Insurance Companies By Complaint Ratings

In my 20 years experience working in the auto insurance industry, I have concluded most auto insurance companies are mediocre: you can have a bad experience, or good experience with any car insurance company. However, some auto insurance companies are more mediocre than others, and a few car insurance companies lean towards being downright awful!

Here is my list of the worst car insurance companies in Washington state. I chose auto insurance companies with a very high percentage of complaints made by Washington state customers, compared to other companies. I also considered companies with a decent market share, or name recognition with the public, due to reputation or advertising. I tried to eliminate any insurance company so small, one complaint makes them go from a low complaint index, to a high complaint index.

I use the same source of information I used in my previous blog post, “The 40 largest auto insurance companies in Washington State rated by their complaint record.” The worst car insurance companies I list are smaller than the 40 largest car insurance companies I rated in the previous blog post, so be sure to read and find out about your auto insurance company there, if you are lucky enough your car insurance company does not appear on my “worst” list.

Worst car insurance can be a subjective opinion, but all the auto insurance companies I list have at least twice as many complaints against them as the average car insurance company in 2010 (receiving an “F” on my complaint ratings scale), with the worst offenders around 7 times as many complaints as average!

A lot of these car insurance companies sell insurance to high risk customers — people under 25 with no previous insurance, tickets, accidents, DUIs, license suspensions, etc. These types of car insurance companies, usually called nonstandard auto insurance, tend to have high complaint records. But there are nonstandard auto insurance companies not on this list with better complaint records, and quite possibly much lower rates.

If you are insured with one of the car insurance companies on my “worst” list, but have a problem with some insurance companies declining to insure you for whatever reason, try Esurance, Geico, or Progressive. Also consider Allstate, American Family, & Safeco insurance, particularly if you prefer to have a local agent help you with your car insurance.

Without further ado, here is my list, in no particular order (they’re all bad), of the worst auto insurance companies in Washington state:
